culling pups???

Post by chopperdog »

Just wondering what are some of the points used to demermine weather or not to cull a pup? From the time its born till its time to hunt. I hope some of you old timers and die hard houndsmen can share some opinions on this, for beginners like myself..

well cant tell you for sure but one experince i had from the best bear i have been around he was 3 before he turned on and almost got culled 3 times so i would say you just never know depends on how long you want to wait and your willingness to see where it goes

Anyone who culls a pup should have a damn good reason because there is no way of knowing how well it will turn out until at least a year and a half to maybe two years. If there are severe health or mental issues, I can see it being necessary. I have read things from other people that cull because the dog isn't doing as good as they had hoped at a year, and I think the person is a lot slower than the dog.

Ditto what MM just said. Most dogs that have been culled are because the owner didn't do his part. In over 25 years (and 25-30 hounds) I've only gotten rid of three dogs. Two blueticks, one cur. I waited until they were 2 years old.

A pup should do what it's parents did by the same age. I will cull out at 6 months old if they don't fire at a caged animal, and I have had quite a few that would drag them out of the cage. I keep the naturals, and don't worry about the ones that need to go to special ed. I won't sell them or give them away, they don't do the breed any good at all. God never put me on this earth to give culls a place to live, he put me here to catch game, and I try my best not to let him down. But hey, somebodies got to feed some, it just aint me. There's some that never make it to 6 months.

And yes, I'm a Plott guy.

Well Preston, glad my parents did not cull me for not being precocious. If you were not a Plott guy, I would have you send me a couple of your 6 months old rejects. Oh, I forgot, you don't pawn them off on other people do you? IMO they are like people as to rate of maturity. Some people are mature at 15-16 years and some not until 25 or later.

Did God tell you that himself Preston, you make me laugh. apparently your dogs are just a tool to you. Some strains are just flat out slower starters. I run two strains of dogs, and the one starts dang early, the other may take a year but well worth the wait. Hell I'd even give a stinkin plott more of a chance than that!

culling

Post by papa »

Had a pup out of some coon dogs years ago....only kept him because my daughter loved him...he never barked at a coon, caged or otherwise, until he was almost 2...one night I took him out with my old dog...heard him open for the first time, and figgered it might be trash...he split treed with the old dog...had his own coon...treed 4 more times that night like he had been doin it for years...from then on he was a good one...sometimes takes awhile for the light to come on.
when in doubt turn em out

I've seen it both ways, some look good early but never turn out great. Then others run around actning like they don't have a clue then the light turns on. Like Bookem said it's something each of us will decide on our own.

Might have came off a little strong for some folks but I agree with you for the most part. The Lord above aint never talked to me or nothin that I can remember but I have and will continue to cull early but for all kinds of reasons. That being said, I have never culled a pup cause it wouldnt bark at a cage coon. Probably have only shown 5 or 6 of them in my life though.

This is some of the dumbest stuff I have ever heard. There are some hounds that won't even look at a caged animal, but will then go on to win nights hunts one after another. At six months you shouldn't even be thinking about hunting a 6 month old. Their minds aren't mature enough and their bodies sure aren't. Thank God you are a plott guy.
