culling pups???

Paul, posts such as yours just muddy the water. Who said there are not dogs that start at 4-6 mos? Some do, most do not. Who said a dog should be 18-24 mos. old before it is "ready"? Most are ready before that, a few are not. And I would wager that there are some people on this site that have worked with as many dogs and wore out as much shoe leather as you have. The original argument on these posts was not whether 4 mos. or 24 mos. were pertinent numbers, but rather if 6 mos. was an appropriate "cut-off" age. Regardless, these are the type arguments that will never be settled to everyone's satisfaction.

well boys ive come to the conclusion that there are more culls in the hound hunting world then there are good, youve just got to accept it and not take it personally, i mean those culls didnt come from your loins. All you have to do is run your operation how you want to not how somebody from a different area that youve never met before wants you to run it. if i did that id have show dogs and adds in full cry lmao just kidding.

i agree that evrybody should cull how they please.but i have just been sitting here thinking and every hound i know of that is just sure enough jam up do it all with or without help cold nosed run all day gritty hounds with lots of bottom were born doing it. it didint take them 1.5 or two years. but theres not a whole lot of those dogs around but in my opinion if your looking for the best dont worry about the breed or kennel it came from look at the history of the line. and look for it to pop up at a young age if your fine with average wait longer. but i wouldnt cull a dog for what it does to a caged animal cull it where it counts in the woods. from what i have seen and done there is maybe to outstanding hounds per litter a few average and the rest duds but i look at no papers or championships im old school i get pups off of the best dogs i have or the best ones in town and if they dont do like there parents and there parents they get culled and im not going to name an age cause its different for evry dog in my opinion

I agree a dog should be half woren out by 2yrs. not just starting the only way a slow starter would sh!t in my yard would be running

My lead dog will have nothing to do with a caged critter. On the other hand you take him out and show him a track and he usually makes me very proud.

I dont expect much out of my young dogs, however I do count on my older dogs to mentor to them.

At 6 months i dont expect the pup to trail and tree it own coon But it better try like hell and not quit to fast or i will get rid of it.


I have culled 18 out of 21 dogs i will garintee you none of those dogs will ever beat me in a night hunt.


I cull for lack of drive , or instict . And lazyness.

I have never seen a pup with these problems ever be more than a average dog and to some people average is turning out

A hound fireing on a gaged coon means nothing to me.
