Schooled!

Post by MadCatter »

Well, the young girls got schooled last night. It's been dry, dry, dry here in SE Colorado, making conditions tuff. I planned to go run a coon for these two young dogs just for the workout. I spoted a tree grove full of fresh coon tracks earlier in the day. I planned to meet a buddy there at dark. While driving up to the meeting spot, guess who was standing in the road? MR. TOM BOBCAT! Well, I knew a race with a bobcat at dark would be tough, but I couldn't pass up a hot track for these unexperienced dogs (Larry's three and seen some limited action, and Morgan the 8 month old Duncan pup).

Well, as the cat jumped off the road into the thick stuff, I dumped the dogs. Larry made a quick pass to the right and turned back left. She threw her head up winding the cat and went in at the same spot as the cat. Morgan followed shortly after her.

All hell broke lose in a couple of seconds with Larry striking and breaking through brush. I'm pretty sure I heard the cat tearing through the brush as well.

Suddenly, Larry treed, with Morgan sounding off a bit as well. I grabbed the .22 to go in after them and couldn't find my shells. I also had to call my buddy who was still waiting on me down the road. Well, long story short, the cat jumped while I was digging for shells, and the race was on.

My buddy arrived and we spent the next two hours listening to the dogs lose and relocate the track. Eventually, they lost it for good. The pup kept coming back to check in while Larry never gave it up.

I felt good that they at least gave it hell trying under tough conditions. Another day MR. TOM, you SOB.

I'm praying for some snow, and then we'll give the girls another chance... This time in the daylight!

I've located several cats, but man it's tuff in the dry conditions out here.

Makes me wonder why I keep buying gas and "wasting" my time. URE, I think your right... It is a sickness! LOL
