Re: coyote trap
The best live trap for coyotes is a leghold trap.

Re: coyote trap
You guys need to be a little more clear on what type of traps your talking about. LIVE traps include everything from cages, snares, and footholds just to name a few. I've caught many coyotes in cage traps. But they are by far the least successful type of live trap for coyotes. If you trap nuisance animals in the city limits or other urban areas, sometimes the only type of trap that is legal is a cage trap. But you'd better have everything perfect or you're just wasting time.

i agree with full cry, not to mention nuscience trapping is a whole different ball game, u get to work in some pretty wierd areas thats for sure. Full cry them western yotes look like jack rabbits compaired to the ones we got, what would them 2 weigh about 20 lbs each? i think most of ours have dog in them personally, its not odd to get them in the 50 lb range. not sure about the western coyotes, never bin west of town lol.

Re: coyote trap
i meant a cage
but i did buy a foothold..probably ad a few more in the future
they are nusicense animals dueto the fact that they moved in on the land we rabbit hunt this past summer and have decimated the population..and are all my beagles run
so they are going to be dealt with
arkansas frog.. i dont know what kind of wiley coyotes you got out there but iv'e seen it done and have had em walk right up a few yards from me for no reason
jake bell...they get pretty big round these parts..maybe 35-40 pounds

Re: coyote trap
A B it sounds like they must be getting nice and fat off your rabbits lol, do u peel the hide? i know that real western coyotes have twice as good a coat as ours and they draw alot more money at the fur auction, i skin every one i kill unless it has the mange or its sick in any other way, then i burn it for safety sake. im in pest contol and if you can catch a problem coyote you can catch anything because they are the hardest thing to trap around here, and in town you cant really use a leg hold as full cry stated, you gotta improvise. its kind of a pain but i love it, it sure beats working in an office or fixing leaky pipes like i used to do lol.

Re: coyote trap
In AZ you can only use leg holds on private land. And to trap at all I think you still need a lisence even on your own land. Unless you are 14 or under, but even then you need to get an ID number for the traps. You can still use cage traps on public land but there you better hide them well from theives.

Re: coyote trap
Cool leg holds all the way then! I used to trap before the leg holds was taken away on public lands. You should be ok on private land not likly that a game warden will even check up on you. But you should still pick up a copy of the trapping regs or you can find them online at Arizona game and fish. Here is a link to the PDF file:
http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/regulatio ... /08-09.pdf
I find the regs abit hard to follow... way to many add ons and junk. But basicly you have to have a department Issued ID number and buy a trapping lisence. Also there is a trapping course you have to take to get a lisence as well, that must have been added since I quit trapping. Likly a good idea to make sure you are legal even if there is little to no chance of anyone even knowing your trapping on private land...
When I was trapping I had some people trasspass onto our property and thier dog got caught in one of my traps. I was home at the time and heard the dog and ran over there but by time I got there they had alredy taken my trap off the dog and tossed it into a high tree. Guy would not tell me where my trap was and threatened to call the sheriff. This was back before everyone had a cell phone so I was able to run back to the house and call our game warden, he was close so got here before they got back to thier car. He set them strait and got them to tell me where my trap was. Thier dog was unharmed but the woman was crying over her dog and hugging it like it was a child.

Re: coyote trap
For a Coyote set using leg holds I would use whats called a cubby set. Basicly you dig a small hole (around 6inches deep) up against a rock or bush ect. Put the bait in there rabbit fur or foot, head, guts ect should be fine (its illegal to have exposed animal parts, to prevent the catching of raptors). You can use a Flag of cloath ect to draw the intererst though(works good for bobcats, coyotes are curious too and will check out something waving in the breeze). Then set the traps in front of the hole so that the critter has to step in them to stick its nose in the hole, for coyote its around 8-10 inches from the hole. Try to keep the traps clean and as oder free as posible. Also get some good lure scents and coyote urine will help make the sets more atractive to your target animal.
If that area has not been trapped for a while you should do very well at first! Once you start missing or get a few pull outs and educating them coyotes can get very hard to catch
Good luck! Wish I still had a good place to trap, brings back some good memories.
