Gary, I have not hunted in south Texas, but have talked with others who have and also with an older man who lives and hunts down there so I have a fair idea of how they go about it. May want to try it sometime.
Actually, I no longer cat hunt, but sure did enjoy it for years. Nearly all of the land around here is in smaller tracts and is leased out for deer hunting. It is difficult to avoid trespassing and many of the deer hunters do not appreciate hounds. So I just coon hunt around here and take several trips a year to New Mexico to hunt bear and lion. Also, we have so many coon and few cats that it is very difficult to straight cat hunt here.
Thanks for your comments.

Missouri he Cave State !
Missouri is known as the : Show Me State, Where the Rivers Run, and The Cave State. I hunt Bobcats and Hogs with a combination of Running Walers & Julys , Ridgeback BMC crosses , Catahoulas, Treeing Walkers, Mountain Curs, and Plotts.
50% of the Bobcats we jump we catch on the ground.Out of that 50% more than half go in caves or crevices or other holes in the ground and then are caught by the hounds. We also catch alot of Bobcats on River Bluff Ledges.
I'd say we only tree about 5% of the cats we jump in a actual tree.We hunt goverment land with clear cuts that may be more than a thousand acres. Still yet a 2 hour race is an extremely long cat race in my country.
A Bobcat doesn't have much wind, If a pack of Running Hounds and Curs has a Bobcat stinking the race won't last long. I don't think a Bobcat can run over a Quarter of a mile if he really has a fire set under him!
Bet y'all are wondering about the 45% percent of the bobcats our dogs jump, that I didn't metion .... ? LoL Only the cats know!

Harold Parker & Louis Skinner, both in Ms. have dry ground hunted cats for years. I have never in my life been so impressed with another mans dogs as Harolds. He has been breeding his own strain of running walkers for cathunting for over 25 years. He will catch 50 to 75% of the cats on the ground. As he explained it to me, down south, it is so much thicker & u need running dogs. If a dog is stopping to check trees, he will never catch up to the cat. He says up north where the woods are more open, cats are more likely to tree, but not always. Like said above, when that cat is really stinking, the race is about over.
Harold & Louis came over & hunted with me twice. The first time, he dumped about 6 dogs out ahead of the truck & I was having nightmares about chasing these dogs all over the country. After we had roaded them a mile, I knew he had straight catdogs, because if they wanted to run deer or coyotes, they had plenty of opportunity. We roaded them about 3 miles & we could see his dogs getting busy. They coldtrailed about 20 minutes or so & jumped the cat, ran it about 15 minutes & Harold said, its about time for the dogs to make a lose & he had no sooner said it & that's what happened. Well they got him jumped again, ran him about another hour & 15 minutes & caught him. Not a big bob, but weighed 21 & 1/2#. Average cat for here. As soon as we got there, he told the dogs to get behind him & all of them, followed us out & loaded in the truck without putting a hand on them. U could tell, Harold puts alot of time & effort in putting a handle on these dogs.
He came back another time, same scenerio & jumped another cat. We ran this cat about 5 hours, all in the same area, & then the cat lined out headed for the highway. We got to the highway ahead of the dogs & Harold said he could not take a chance & started blowing his truck horn. Within 10 minutes all dogs were at the truck, about nine of them & loaded. I dont know about ya'll, but when u can call your dogs off a hot race, that is a master dogman. We saw this cat twice & it was a huge cat for our area. Harold said it would go 30# or better.
