I use a Garmin 60CS x and I love it.. I have the all topo maps on my computer and down load my tracks and waypoints onto it. I like to keep track of how far and how fast.

But one of the most useful things it does is I always mark where I park my rig or if I have to tie up my mule or horse or where camp is, this way I can always find my way back easily without fumbling around in the dark too long. I'm sure everyone has been in that position where your wondering if you have come out above or below where you tied up or where camp is with the GPS I always know..

After reading on here about the astro I finally went ahead and ordered one with a couple of new collars. I think for the way I hunt it will be just right..
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

I also use a Garmin 60 series, great gps.
I use mine with topo maps and marine bluecharts.
An invaluable tool for sure.

never leave home with out it. had the garmin map60 csx and then found out that the astro is almost the same unit and for the extra 150 bucks you get a collar. sent back the csx 60 and got the astro not as user friendly as 60csx but it is set up for dog tracking more than just finding your way around a new area, city. so far worth its weight in gold.

I use a Lowrance Hunt in the bush and we have our big lowrance screens out of the boat in the truck. It sure is an awsome tool. we save all the forest roads and trails that are not on Map Create. Then at the end of the year the guys that hunt with us down load each others trails so we all have the same trails marked. I've had Garmin's to but i think that the lowarnce is easier to use, and not as many different menus. They all do the same things, but i think the lowrance handhelds have a little bigger screen for easier veiwing.

I have many GPS as I started out with one that you couldn't download anything in to it but you could save waypoints. I also have a Magellan Sporttrak that I use and my Garmin Astro. I like all of them pretty much the same. The software with them however is a different story. One is very good with water sources and roads. The other is very good with roads and springs and points of interest. I download and upload everything like most of you and keep records on the computer so I can get back into an area and already know it with out having to wonder where the roads and trails go.

Still trust the old tracking system. I'm two years into hunting lions so I am very young to this but. The old timer that took me in has showed me alot and I am very greatful for that. He turns his old box on with needle nose pliers not had long cold night yet.Got the new gps system (double up for safety)and in the ledges, canyons, ups and downs the gps was not worth the batts. in it the old monster ant. and a 6x6 box saved the day! Also stay very far away from the hand held unit that has fold out ant. looks like some satalite.Bear hunting dogs struck and bailed on the trail had the little unit the goes in the belt holder bad signals or no signal. Walk to the dogs and on high power it would not pick up the dogs at 200 yards. My johnson system has been great and so is the customer service when you need to reservice it.
