Ruffle Tailed Coon 02-16-09

Post by bency »

Well last night I had the opportunity to take out a fellow new mexican that was interested in doing some hounddawging, so I figured I slowly break him in with some coon hunting. :beer
I gave him a good idea how the night would be, saying that he'd see some good dog work, and maybe see a coon or two.
But DAM last night was some of the best coon hunting I’ve been on in awhile, treed five coons, two in the first tree which was a big ol' cotton wood near the river, another two together up in a some sort of elm right off of a ditch cannal, then a nice big Boar lonner up in a pecan tree and not to mention the dogs went and trashed and treed a ferral cat. I didn’t get any pictures of the first two trees, the batteries where goners, but I made a quick run back to the house and picked some up just in time for the last coon.

This last coon was nothing real great was just roading two dogs through the pecan orchards, when both the dogs winded some scent went over into the orchards and started trailing till they were wood solid. I let the guy shoot this coon out since he was getting pretty trigger happy, ended up being a dandy, I thought the tail on this coon was unique, short and stubby like a bobcat.

i get coons with no tails quite often but its from my dogs when they catch them on the ground one grabs tail one grabs head or throat and snap like a lizard tail ha ha
its better to tree and let live then tree and kill to never be ran again

Alot a times the big bores dont havea tail due to fightin. another bore bites it and then then it gets infected due to coons are not the best at wiping their buts. When they get infected the tail dies and falls off. I just got one 2 nites ago that was all pussy and infected that was about to drop off.

I think its from fighting each other. Ive treed several like that. I always wonderd why. Then one night I drove upon two coons fighting in the road over some road kill. They had each other by the base of the tail rolling around in the middle of the hwy.
