puppy Q?

Post by gila_hound_chaser »

I was wondering how all you hounds men teach a new 8 week old puppy when you get it home? How do you teach it to hunt or to leave you for a long time before it returns to you out in the field?

Take it with you everywhere when you do things outdoors, it will be a work in progress as at first it will only be with in a few yards of you but later it gets more daring and will go a rocks throw in distance and come back, and keep going further as time progresses.

you know that old saying, old dogs dont learn new tricks..? Well start imprinting early. Take it for walks and get the pups nose working, do some hot dog grags and go get a coon tail to play with occasionally. MY pups started and ran there first track at 3 1/2 months and are now 1 1/2 years and full of piss and vineger.

Yeah......8 weeks is a little young. Hopefully you have a fully trained (and broke) older dog to do the training for you. When I get a young dog (or pup) I mainly get it to handle which would be learn it's name and how to load. Then when it is physically big enough to get around in the woods I just start turning it loose with my older dogs. The older dogs do all of the training for you. You just have to have the knowledge of when to step in and correct bad behavior. A well bred pup will start to perform naturally it's in their genes.

just take into the woods all that you can, so he can explore, and maybe do some hot dog drags with him.
