Post by walkersrule »

just wondering how many of you cat hunters ever run grey fox. well, if youve never tried it, you should. its like a jumped cat race that lasts for hours. i have ran a few now and caught a couple and i am hooked. garanteed im not gonna pass one up from now on.

I don't think the dogs I have will put enough presure on one to tree it. I catch my share of the bobs but don't think my dogs like them enough to run them with heart.

I'm a cat hunter....alway have been, always will be.

even if i couldnt catch em i would still run them just to listen to the race and its good exercise for them dogs. might even help out with the cat hunting part of it. locating, treeing, and running harder. jmo.

It will definitely help them on running (longevity/cardio wise).......In my experience it's harder for dogs to locate a cat than a fox..

the locating i was talking about was for the puppies (easy for them) to learn on. so that they would learn what happens at the end of the track and put two and two together.

walkersrule. not sure of your location in sw. oregon. i did alot of damage control for bear in cave junction from the 80's thru just a few years ago for foris vineyards winery. towards the caves highway there was a ton of greys in the althouse cr,sucker cr.area, holland mainline. holland was the small community close to some good fox running action. very common to see as many as 10 greys a day walking cross country on the private ranches. always thought it would be a blast to run them with a hound.i never tried them, always dealing with a problem bear at the time. you have to be careful in all of that country. lots of dope growing hippies!

i got to go out this year and turn a dog in about 15 or so fox races in brush that goes for miles. a dog really has to know how to get through the woods. i got to hunt with fox hunter sonny turner. when those dogs are pouring it on it sounds as good as a bear race. i almost don't waiste my time bobcat hunting anymore unless i get a nice snow. there are so many fox sometimes we would catch 3 in one night. im hooked.

If you were hunting with Sonny Turner, I know you were listening to dogs run a fox the way it is supposed to be done. I've only hunted with him once, Bear hunted as a matter of fact, many years ago, but we have mutual friends and I know he keeps very nice hounds. As he has bought some of the nicest fox/cat dogs I've ever seen from friends of mine over the years.
