What is the best thing to catch a coon on?

While trolling I use a tri-colored "Rooster Tail" Walker . Just Kiddihg a little - I've had luck with reguler old sardines with the can !/2 open and wired in the back of the live trap. Also that sweet bear call works to suck them in. Put some weight on your trap to keep them from rolling your cage over. Main thing is setting it where coons are traveling - make yourself a little feed station and when its working take your young dog and you might not need to trap one. It's alot of fun putting one in a gunny sack . Frontier

my experience to. fishy smells attract skunks. it anit fun messin with them in traps. penut butter and jelley, heavy on the jelley. or honey buns work. but the thing about honey buns is that i usually eat them before i get to set my trap, they are jsut to damn good.

oh ya, like frontier was sayin, its will higher your catch percentage if you wire your bait can to the back of yer trap, them little buggers have took many a bait from my traps by just pullin the whole bait can out and takin off. tuna cans is what i use, jsut poke holes in the bottom and wire it down, and shove whatever it is ur usin for bait in there tight so they cant just pull the bait out. good luck

First of all use a quality trap. Two door havaharts are JUNK so don't even waste your time. Coons roll traps over all the time. Roll over a Havahart, the door falls open!
Second, don't set your trap directly on the ground unless you want to catch a skunk. Skunks can't climb so simply set your trap up on a log or set up a couple of blocks to set your trap on. You can use wire to help tie down your trap so it is solid.
Bait isn't as important as getting everything else correct. For example, don't let the trap wiggle at all, make sure it is rock solid or the coons won't step on the trap floor. Use some camoflage like leaves, dirt etc on the trap floor. Depending on the time of year has more to do with the type of bait to use. Early spring, the females are pregnant and are looking for protein, meat type baits like smoked bacon are killer on coons this time of year.

peanut butter and honey a 50 50 mix stir real good put it in a tuna can wired to the back of your trap i have caught two coon in one trap with this mix

a friend of mine uses marshmellow cream he says they seem to like it and you wont catch a bunch of house cats

Tried peanut butter and honey and got a possum...caught nothing but coons on mini marshmallows...accidentally got some big marshmallows one time and caught a grey fox! Someone told me they looked like eggs and that's why it caught the fox. Don't know if it's that or just got lucky and put the trap near a den. I've always put the trap on the ground on a trail where I see tracks and coverd the sides and back with brush. But then again, everything I just said I learned on this site and I'm just a beginner.

Marshmellows work good but you have to set the trap damn near on top their runway.Fish and smoked meat scraps work great,except for the skunks.I've also caught quite a few fishers this way as well.

I usually use the remains after cleaning fish. Heads, guts, etc.

Better check your local game laws - out west most states don't allow Game animal parts or game fish for bait (even heads etc ). Don't want to get a ticket - there are some great lures and baits you can also purchase . Also check out " egg coon trap " in most trap supply books.

Or you can use a fox call by a den tree with meat and a ready walker
