Bear study area

Post by Smiley »

I have been hearing of some pretty crappy ethics going on in the bear study units in western Idaho.
One in particular is of a guy from southern Idaho ( I heard preston but not sure and do not know his name ) that he killed 8 sows last year for friends he had put in and that this year he killed 4 and a this years cub .
I do not know if this is true or not but would like to know and would like to talk to the slob .
Thanks for any information .
I would like to know if this is true or false.

Don't know anything about this guy, but it's not like it would really make a difference. You can tree 2 to 3 bear a day in that area. Plus you have to draw to kill a bear and theres only 25 tags drawn for that area. Most people that draw don't kill a bear anyway they just like to keep pursuing that area with little compitition. Now if he's killing them illegaly then yeah it is a problem and it will catch up to him sooner or later.
Just my 2 cents. don't want to make anyone mad.

Apparently your not to smart. First of all there are 2 separate areas that allow 75 permits in the spring and 75 in the fall. So combined that's 300 permits a year  which frankly is about 275 to many  And any where you start killing off sows will make a definite difference in years to come. These people who keep talking about how many bears are in these areas apparently haven't hunted it regularly in the past few years. The bear population has dropped drastically in the last 3 years. Mainly do to the increase of tags and the taking of breeding sows by non caring hunters. I don't hold it against a boot hunter for killing a sow beings its hard to sex them on the ground but its immoral in my opinion for a person who calls themselves a "houndsmen" to allow it. Just my 2cents and I live smack dab in the middle of it, so I see first hand whats actually going on here.

Well I guess i'm not smart am i. Sounds like your the man for that department.
Oh and i don't hunt that area only but about 1 weekend a month and have NEVER come home without seeing at least 3-4 bear in a tree.
Try that were i hunt you would be really dam lucky to find that many bear in 2 days. But then again maybe i can't find that many bear where i hunt because i'm " I'm not to smart"

There are a $h!t ton of bear in that area compared to other areas. That is why they chose it to be a bear study area back whenever. Oops was that to smart to say. Sorry.

COME ON GUYS BAND TOGETHER , MAYBE ONE GUY HAD HIS INFO. WRONG GIVE HIM A BREAK. IF THE LAW ALLOWS THE TAKING OF SOW WHAT CAN YOU DO? TRY AND SPREAD THE WORD THROUGH YOUR LOCAL CLUB TO REFRAIN FROM TAKING SOWS. SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A COASTY THAT MOVED OVER THERE AND HASN'T SETTLED DOWN YET. HE WILL SOON FIND OUT BIGGER IS BETTER, AND THE REPUTATION OF KILLING MONSTER BEARS IS FAR BETTER THAN THE REPUTATION OF KILLING SMALL SOWS. THATS JUST 2 CENTS FROM THE COAST

Blackandtanman1 nailed it. I live in unit 31 and have hunted it for years. The bear #'s are way down. There are still alot of bears but not like it used to be. They do have 75 draw tags passed out, spring and fall. The study is bogus and has been going on for years. What else do you need to know about a bear?
Id rather be lucky than good!!!

Even though I live across the border into Utah, I know a lot of the Preston/Franklin County houndsmen. If it's true that one of them is wiping out the sows, I haven't heard of them. I think these local guys would be just as pissed.

aw yes the land of the pop up bears. i do have to say that there is a definit decrease in the bear numbers there. but i dought it is because 4 sows got killed... yes sows are your future but looking at the big picture is the F&G just need to reduce the total bear harvest in that area to let them rebound a little.. fighting with each other is not how to get it done. every one needs to wright letters to the F&G and just exsplain that you are concerned with the bear numbers in the area.
