Washburn Walkers

[Lil Joes BigGame hounds]

I was just wondering if anyone hunts Washburn Walkers? A guy I hunt with has some but he doesnt put any time in with them so they dont know much(like there name ) but im sure they could be great dogs given an honest chance. Just wanted to get a little info on them. Thanks, Joe

A whole lot of em I have seen used by real hunters make some great dogs. Lots of drive, nose and guts.

It ain't the dog's fault if they don't get to go do their thing. Hunters got a get out of bed and get out there in the woods and give the dogs a chance. That is why I am so picky about who gets our pups because if you raise them you owe them a shot. Puppy factorys and dog jockies don't give a $hit. Buyer beware!

I owned one some time back was a real nice hound had everything you could ask for in a cat hound but lacked on the tree. Mike you are so right if pups dont go in the right hands of hunters I dont care how good they are bred they dont have a chance. later Andy

My partner and myself have been hunting Washburn bred dogs for 15+ years. We find then to usually be above average, of course some as with any hounds turn out to be culls. Most make exceptional hounds, we have used them on coon and bear mostly. Love them enough to be continuing to breed for the best, we are currently crossing with an old blooded Finley River hound, seems like they are going to be the real deal.

Washburn hounds have lots of Drive, yet can be handled with ease. They have good cold noses and good feet. I have enjoyed hunting this line of hounds and shudder to think of having to hunt some of the Nite Hunt bred hounds.

I've owned 1 washburn dog back in the mid 90's. His name was flag he was a good bear dog. Fast, very gritty, and could put many dogs to the road on a long runner. That dog had incredible longevity. Wasn't a strike dog, and wasn't worth a hill of beans on a varmint, but I loved him on bear......

Did you get moved? My winter was a bust had to coon hunt alot but had a good time anyway. Saw coon on a very consistant basis which makes feeding these hounds easier. We will try to make a hunt this summer.

I have a hunting buddy here that has a couple of Washburn pups and they are doing a nice job.They are kind of sit back off the tree , tree dogs and you wouldn't win a tree contest . But kind of nice dogs.

I have hunted with alot of his dogs over the 20 years I have hunted with him and consider him a very close friend almost family. Most make very good dogs anybody would want some don't. Mike said a mouthfull!!! How old are those dogs? I'd pick them up and give them a chance if they could be got.

Well, it is refreshing to see people being honest about someone else's line of dogs. I have owned 6 of Gerry's line in the last 10-12 years. I would say that 4 of them made good dogs and 2 were culls which he replaced. Two or three of the four were/are outstanding.

Over many years I have tried most, but not all, of the other lines of Treeing Walkers. I have tried different strains of the Finley River (John Monroe, Lonnie Mears, etc.), Nances Little Topper (Marosok), Hickory Nut Harry (Ball and others). A few of them made decent dogs, but the percentage overall was VERY low.

This is not to "knock" anyone's line of registered dogs. I have no doubt there are some very good ones, but I have had better luck finding "old" lines of crossbred dogs in the hands of hard hunters who are not experimenting in breeding, but are staying with what is tried and proven.
