It's Over

Post by sheimer »

Well, the cat season is ending tonight here in Montana. I had a good year with the older of my two dogs getting much better and my young female getting a taste of what next year has to offer. The season ended for me today around noon while we were cold trailing a nice tom track and the snow started to fall. The dogs did well and we called it off after the snow got a couple inches deep. It was a nice day and even though there was no cat in the tree, I still enjoyed it. Hopefully all of you had a good season. I'm impatiently awaiting next December.

Take care,

Scott

Typical last day weather, woke up to about 8" of fresh stuff this morning. I was thinking we should get a season extension like the elk hunters did this year. :D :D

Andy, he does a good job, just needs more use. This is the first year I've really given him a chance. He still shows a lot of pup in him but he's come a long ways this year. He was under a half dozen or so lions and about the same number of bobbers. This morning would have been perfect to be out hunting.....4 inches of perfect fluffy stuff.

Thats the way it goes sure would be nice to keep chasing when the weather is worm. What other dog are you hunting? Stud was one of the best bobcat dogs I ever walked behind in his day he had the complete package, brains, speed, nose, tree power and tough as nails.

Andy,

I've got a 11 month Bluetick/Walker cross female. She's got a ton of hunt, just lacks direction. She should be good. I just ordered a pup from Ken Duncan. It should be ready the middle of July.

Did you ever spend any time hunting with Shane Jensen? The two guys that I hunt with hunt some of the pups that he had a few years back. They all remind me of the dogs that you and Mike Leonard talk about. Busy, cold nosed, fast, and tree hard. They love to chase the bobcats. The lions take the back seat. Their only major fault is their feet.

Scott, Shanes old dog he called Marlin buetic x walker went back to my first old hound 25 yrs ago Badger bluetic x walker and also Stud, old Nance breeding I have owned studs mom to his dad to his grandma and grandpa they all went back to the old school Nance blood. As for their feet these dogs all were very tough footed. That is were the bobcat hunt in the dogs you are talking about is coming out as I have always strived for great bobcat hounds over all other. Hope your new pup turns out its always exciting taking a pup hunting and watching their progress. later Andy

Andy, thanks for the history on the dogs. I enjoy learning that kind of stuff. Shane lost Marlin just about the time that I got into the hounds. I've never heard a bad word about that dog. I'll let you know how the pup turns out.

Thanks again,

Hey Scott, thanks for leaving me that track the other day. We waited awhile for you and then turned loose where you left it. Ended up on the Lime Kiln at about the fire line. A pretty tom that will be a nicer one next year. The snow got too deep for this old man the last week so the feline addiction will have to wait til next year. Maybe I'll harass the coon a little or maybe I'll have to work..... nah. Thanks again. Jim M.

Jim, I had no idea that you were on here. Glad to have you. Your one of the guys that I would like to hear some stories from. I would have liked to ran that last track with you. My pup would have gained a lot from it. Well, I guess there's always next year. I seem to have the trash problem somewhat slowed down :D . The last day I couldn't resist and went up the trailhead and cut a big tom track and just couldn't get it straightened out before the snow got it filled in. The old snow was well past your thighs in a lot of spots. Well, If you are out lookin for a coon and need some company, call anytime.

Scott, I heard your dogs below us that day and then again over by the Switchback as we were going west. Glad to see you got them back without too much trouble. I was on here for awhile before it changed owners an then back on about a year or so again. Don't post much, but have gleaned alot of useful info and met some knowledgable contacts. If you are looking for stories or advice from me you might need a better role model. Just an old houndogger that by God's grace gets to and loves to hunt. Isn't it interesting how on the 15th of April we all are waiting for Dec. 1? Always next year! Good luck with that new pup. I also talked to Andy when he first got his Topper dog about breeding a female of mine but Ive been dragging my feet. Hey do you still have mares you might want to breed? Jim

Yea, I'm sure you could hear my dogs for quite a while, It was quite the deer chase. Tritronics has hopefully cured that issue. The female blue dog I got has a bunch of hunt in her and hopefully she'll be ready for next year. I'm really anxous to start a pup that is from a long line of good dogs. Hopefully I can get the two shitheads that I already have in shape to teach a pup some good manners :D . Well, I guess next December will let me know if I did my job over this summer.

I may have up to 3 mares for you. I'll get a hold of you here sometime soon and we'll get the details worked out.
