How do i get my dog to stop slick treeing

Post by Bluehoundsman »

I have a 3 yr old male that has been running and treeing his own coon for almost 2 yrs but has slick treed from time to time. HE is a awesome tree dog that stays put and tries to bark the tree down. (Very hard treeing) But he has started to slick tree more often . I want to get him on bobcats this year but dont want along walk for nothing. Any help pointers will be appreciated.

Personally, if the dog has treed a ton of game and is starting to "slick tree" I would start whipping the snot out of him every time he does it. I know a few people that have done this and it seemed to work. If he has treed lots of game, he knows the difference and it shouldn't bother him.

I had one of my dogs false tree last weekend as a matter of fact and I tore her butt up when I got to that empty tree. But this dog of mine is a finished older dog and knows damn well what she got whipped for.

I could tell by the way she was treeing that she didn't have it. So I took me a switch to the tree.

I second what Everlast said, don't be shy about whipping a grown dog that knows what its doing at a tree.

Only thing I would add is if your going to discipline them try to do it in a woods that you can immediately turn them back loose. As I am working one over he is getting told that he better get it right and when I am done he is sent on and told again to get it right.Another thing that I have seen alot of younger guys do,is "giving a dog the benefit of the doubt" way to much.If they are wrong get on them.If discipling them at a tree takes the tree out of them then they weren't much of a tree dog any way.
The reason I hunt this blood is a quote a friend gave me,"Your either making dust or your eating it."
