What do you breeders look for in the male dog if the female dog is coming into heat?

First of all I look and see if I can live with him. In other words, does he do anything at home or in the truck that will make me want to kill him. Secondly, I make damn sure he can catch the critter I want to chase in the style I want him to.

Totally, too many guys use a stud based on pedigree alone.I could give two shits about peigree as long as they give me 100% on the game I want them to catch.

Before I give the male dog a second thought I look at the bitch. What is she? What does she bring to the idea of being a puppy machine? Is she solid in all areas of hunting the desired game I want? Does she come from a solid back ground or was she picked up at the pound and just sort of worked out. Good greif if you are going to the trouble of raising a batch of those little barking shitters you better give some thought before you go any further.

Stud dog? Is he a STUD?

We call a real stud an achiever, a producer, and somthing we want to reproduce. Hell Barney Phife probably had balls but I don't reckong you or Andy would have considered him a stud.

This old dog world is full of pups and there is sombody out there right now who has a wife yelling at him becasue he raised a bunch of barking, stinking little flop bastards that he can't even give away to his freinds.

So in the words of the KILLER Jerry Lee Lewis......Think about it

Well said Mike. People would be time and money ahead (in the end) if they'ed just go buy a good pup. I don't mean one your friend down the road just had on accident. Figure out what game you want to hunt then look for dogs that have excelled on that game for many generations. Like I said in the end you'll be better off paying top price for that pup than raising a whole litter of culls.

I need to know what the dog can do so i can decide if he has what I need First hunting ability Always. Example If I'm looking to put some speed, cold nose, hot nose, silent track or open track in my line i look for that. Then i get references and check health history of other litters. As for papers i like them for blood line name only don't care if they ever comp hunted.Half the time I wonder if people are trying to convince others or their selves that they know what they are doing.Hope this helps. Also make sure your female is worth breeding to if not do the hound world a favor and spayed her.
