Faster Farther.

Post by Roy Auwen »

3 or 4 good bear dogs will get er done ,most of the time on most of the bears. But a good running bear will generally go farther faster. With more dogs on it.And a walking bear will also. The no climbers generally bay up and hold quicker with one or two dogs on it.I have taken out more bad bears, this way over the last forty years.Do'nt write anything in stone about bears! They will humble you quickly! Roy

3-5 dogs is what I like to run. But in my opinion when you start running more than 5or6 dogs you start risking any dog that is getting in and grabbing a little fur.
When you have dogs that go in and grab fur the dogs that hang back will often go in a bit and then back off often getting in the way of the dogs that are doing some of the dirty work and therefore resulting in the better dogs getting caught .
Not every bear will climb but I believe that every bear can be stopped.
Here is something else to think about . Say you have one dog that is faster than the rest of your dogs by a large margin that dog catches up to the bear and either puts a ton of pressure on that bear to climb or just keeps pushing the bear, ity is my opinion that a bears mood will dictate how that bear may react for several hours . If that bear is swarmed with a couple dogs that are really givving it the what for that bear will likely climb farely fast but if the dogs are strung out and just show up from time to time and that same bear that would tree feels like he has things under control then that bear may not tree at all. I hope what I said was clear. It was to me

I agree Smiley . I think the first few minutes the dogs catch the bear is what sets the tone for the rest of the day . Usually if several dogs hit him real aggressively right off the chances of him climbing quick are better .
I like to put 6 dogs on a bear.
