Re: Yaesu VR-500
I bought one just as a cheap back up. I love it its all I use now, very small, light and works great. I got a high gain antenna and with them both they fold up and I can take them with me to any tree.

what kind of range do you get with it

Re: Yaesu VR-500
Using the high gain I get about 3 miles. With my roof top I get 7 and 8 miles.

Re: Yaesu VR-500
I use a icom, it does a decent job but does not have the range that you would get from a wildlife box. I have been told you can get a booster for it though and that the booster makes up the difference. The price was only $225.00 for the scanner. It is nice being able to track any frequency when you hunt with different guys running different stuff.
Re: Yaesu VR-500
ya i just picked it up yesterday seem's to be ok just can't find out to preset me collars into it. dont reach as far as my wildlife but easy to carry
Re: Yaesu VR-500
I got one and it works ok. It will track any collar. I have the GRE amp and yagi. It will pick up farther than the F&L I had. I put the collar at the house and drove 2 miles with a big hill in between. No beep with the F&L. It took some adjusting but when I figured it out I got a pretty good beep. It is not as easy to use as the F&L and takes more adjustment when farther away. When close with out the amp it is pretty easy to use. It has a meter bar and attunator for close up tracking.

Re: Yaesu VR-500
I have the Yeasu and really like it. I have a wildlife 1000, and it will beep farther than the Yaesu, but not much. And the Yaesu will outbeep my fathers Merlin 6. The first thing you do when you buy one though is take off the rubber ducky antennae that comes on it and throw it away. You can hear the dogs as far as it will beep. I just bought a couple one foot coax's and use a rubber band to hold the Yeasu to the handle of my Yagi. It's pretty much all I use now I have had it for about a year and have only used my 1000 box a few times when I couldn't get abeep with the Yeasu, and only one time that I recall could I get a beep with the 1000.
