I made an early evening hunt tonight with some friends. I left my wifes favorite dog at home. (It aint that good anyhow). I told her I had a premonition. Boy was I right. I will never get used to losing dogs. The frustration and that helpless feeling when there isnt anything I can do except end their pain. I didnt have the stomach tonight to make that decision. In the back of my mind I knew the writing was on the wall but I wasnt able to convince myself that. Instead of stepping up and ending her pain I pussed out. I let the dog suffer a 3 hour ride to the vet just to get the news I had already known and a injection of the pink juce. Im pissed off.

i know your pain. I lost my best female 4 monthes ago to a bad hog, and I lost my best male to a bad hog 2 weeks ago. If you are in this game long enough, you will end up at the bottom sooner or later. Just about like starting over. It is going to be hard to recover. But it can be done.

Im not so sad or upset this morning. Ill miss that dog. She died doin what she loved. I would have rather had her die of old age but im not gonna pretend what happened yesterday isnt a reality of the sport. In the past ive been able to make those tough decisions in the field much easier and quicker. Even after 16 years of hunting I think this experience has tought me a lesson. I dont think I will hesitate in the future to make that tough decision. It lessens the suffering for everyone involved.
