Lend my dogs to a novice?? No way. Lend my dogs to an experienced houndsman that I've hunted with and trust?? Not a problem.

For the most part HELL NO!!! I have one exception because he is like me if there are dogs on the ground he is on the ground. no going back tomarrow when it gets light or driving around waiting for a signal. it is follow the dogs tracks and find them no exceptions.

I think it all depends on how well you TRUST the person. C.J. Prock said he only kept 3 or 4 dogs would borrow dogs from Lee Brothers, I don't see the Lee Brothers loaning dogs out to any Tom, Dick, or Harry houndsmen. If I remember correctly Sewell Goodwen also said he would borrow dogs from the neighbors. From the sounds of things you don't trust your "good friend" or you wouldent be up all night worried about your dogs.

Sounds to me like you learned something worth knowing about this guy that you thought was your friend.

I learned a long time ago that if you think you have a lot of friends, you probably don't have any. On the other hand, if you only have a few friends, then chances are you have some friends worth having.

If you have a true friend, then you can loan him your dog, if the people you call friends are really just non-antagonistic acquaintances, then if you loan him a dog you will end up antagonisgtic acquaintances.

He is my friend. Dont get me wrong. We have been great friends for years. I dont agree with or trust his hunting instincts. Mabye its just personal preference. And since he has been laid off hes been a different person. (indifferent). The issue has since been resolved. As some of you know one of my dogs died the other day on a hunt I was on and this conversation came up on its own. It made the topic easy and the idea that I wasnt gonna loan my dogs out was easily accepted and understood. Thanks to all who helped me think out this situation.

I think we have to different discussions going on and both are great topics:

First - I have loaned a dog or two on a couple of occasions but I also had hunted with these guys a bunch.

Second - I have a couple of real close buds that hunt in different parts of the southwest and on occassions, they will hunt a young dog for me when I cant. I trust these guys to work them and treat them as their own. If you are willing to let them go for the experience you except the risks unconditionally. If you have any doubts your dogs stay home.

I have a few friends that I hunt with. They have on occasion hunted my dogs. But.... I think a few of you have hit the nail on the head with the bonding thing. My dogs don't hunt the same without me. When we go hunting I try and stay as close as possible to them, sometimes it doesn't work out, but my dogs definitely hunt harder for me than my buddies. I'd die for my dogs and my dogs would die for me. Unfortunately, my wife know how close me and my dogs are....

As a rule no, I have let a buddy take and keep one of my older dogs to use to start some youg dogs, my dad or brother could cast my power anytime they wanted, and 3 guys that I hunt with regular could probably borrow certian ones if they asked, but they dont. I mean i have hunted young dogs for them and have asked them to do the same for me. BUt for the most part my pack is not for use by others as most are funny to handle, id say a stranger couldnt touch 99% of my dogs, and the guys I hunt with multiple times a week have trouble with over 50%. Some people seee them as just dogs, they will likely lend some out, I see them as children and they arent going anywhere without someone i would trust my life with.
although we do break our fox dogs from running deer by shooting them (normally rat shot), and I know they could kill one of mine by accident and i could do the same and we shoot each others with no regard to ownership, but I know no one would purposefully kill one we hunt with, and accidents do happen.

I wouldn't loan my dogs to just anyone, but yea there is a guy that knows he can pull in my yard anytime and take any dog he wants. We hunt alot together, and I know he would take every bit as good of care of the dog as I would. And I also know it works both ways....in fact we're always razzin each other about them being "our" dogs. But there ain't no way no how I'd just let anyone take my dogs and hunt them.

Like most of you I say Hell NO!!! But I do have exceptions to that rule. I have a couple of buddies that if they ever asked and they never have but if they did I would let them in a heart beat.

Im with everyone else, there are only 2 that I would trust with me dogs and thats the 2 guys that helped me get into it. If my good deer hunting buddy would come with me more often and learned the ropes a little more I would trust him but you wouldnt want to ruin a relationship with a good buddy over a dog, yes its only a dog to some people but to a lot of us they are part of the family. I think there are exceptions but I wouldnt just loan to them just any of my friends even if I trust them elsewhere, it comes down to if I trust them with my dogs and their instincts in the woods I guess

I agree. Im 17 and i have a strong bond with the man i got my first bluetick from when i was 12. We take eachothers dogs out all the time. I like to run 2 or 3 dogs when i coon hunt and if i only have one to take out, i call him up and take a dog or 2 of his out. And he does the same with me. It all depends on the relationship of the people and if there trust worthy.

FullCryHounds wrote:I would have no problem loaning any of my dogs to only one man. He is the guy that taught me everything I know about running dogs. But, he's now retired. I've yet to run dogs with anyone else since then that I would trust unconditionally with my dogs. So my answer is, no, don't loan them out to anyone. I've had guys ask me and without hesitation I tell them I don't loan out my dogs to anyone.

Well I have loaned out dogs to my brother and one of my best friends, there is one other friend I would loan out to but he would never ask. I think they are more worried than I am when they take them (they know what I would do for my dogs and know they better not come home unless they do the same). I trust them and they know what I would do in most situations because we have hunted together so much. If something bad were to happen, I would understand. If I loaned my dogs out to anyone else and something bad happened I wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
