anybody using any beagle hound crosses?

Post by beaglewalkerhunter4 »

from my limitted knowlege, a bobcat loves to hit the thick briars and give the hounds some pricks. and a beagle was bred to get into all that thick crap and move a rabbit. And perhaps if your hunting in an area with thick cover, cross a good bobcat hound to a good beagle. Just some thoughts, what do y'all think?

As a boy in Florida, one of the best bobcat dogs around was a 1/2 beagle owned by Fred Owens. One of the best deer dogs I hunted with was a bluetick/beagle owned by Sheik Johnson. Abuddy here in Idaho had a 1/2 beagle/1/2 Plott that was a decent bear dog, just a little too slow afoot to keep up with the longer legged dogs.

Hello Beaglewalkerhunter4,

Mr. Ira Woods(hunted in the 1930's into the 70's), one of the all time Great Bobcat Hunters in South Texas ran a Pack of Beagles in his later years. There are only a hand full of Cat Hunters who caught more Cat than Mr. Ira.

One time Dad was in S.TX Cat Hunting with Mr. John Freeman Lott, a Good Houndsman and Cat Hunter in his own right, when they drove up on Mr. Ira. He was well up in age then, was riding an a Buckskin horse and had a dozen or so Beagles around and under the horse and was packing a dead Cat across the Saddle.

Dad asked Mr. Ira about his Dogs and was told "They are broke off everything but Cat and Coon and can Catch most Bobcats they jump". Dad then asked how do you keep them from running Coon, the answer was "I just catch all the Coons out on a Ranch, then I can Cat Hunt!". Mr. Ira was serious and ment every word. He hunted every morning with his Beagles!

Beagles won't work everywhere but can be quite good!

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

To catch all the coons in my country
would take more than one pack.

I will vouch for Dads Dogboy and comments on Ira Woods. I was raised between Devine and Yancey and my Great Grandmother, Aunts and Uncles were from Frio County and most lived in Dilley. I knew Mr. Woods when he was up in age and he hunted those 15 inch beagles most every day. He had an old barn that he tacked bobcat scalps on. From what I remember there was not much wood showing on the inside or out. Now the top cat hunter around Dilley is Robbie Hurt. He catches over 150 cats a year but hunts primarily running walkers.
Adios,

Gary,

Mr. Ira's barn was something else, there sure was not much wood showing. Dad said the business about catching all the Coons off a Ranch first was NO BS. That if Mr. Ira said it he ment it.

If Robbie is going to catch 150 this year it is going to have to Rain 1st. Seriously Robbie, Clinto Brown and Mr. Ellisor are the youngsters coming on to try to fill the shoes of the Likes of Joe Rufus Lyne, Ira Woods, and August Timmerman as Bobcat Hunters. Mr. Ellisor and Clinto might even qualify as replacements for the Snow Brothers as they are awfully good Lion Hunters as well!

Dad and I hope to meet you this year at the Bobcat Hunters Gathering at Dilly in March!

I hunted with August Timmerman back many years ago and used to accompany him to the South Texas Wolf Hunters Meet. I know Clinto but do not know Mr. Ellisor. Where is he from?
