Lion scrapes

Post by .25-06 »

What is your opinion on mutiple scrapes? The reason I ask is there is a area that I used to find a fresh scrape just about every time I'd go there, well about 6 mounths ago there was 5 fresh scrapes all about 30 feet apart and there aint been any new ones since then. A buddy of mine said that when a tom is heading out of dodge he will sometimes make more than one scrape. Terry

I don't know for sure but my gut feeling is old romeo has been laying a lot of calling cards around and nobody has showed up to his party so he has blown this club and headed to a livlier hangout. Wonder where the girls are?
I have seen them in a pretty small area leave as many as 50 scrapes pretty dang close together and usually you can bet the lady of the house is either dead, or has step out on a big walk about and left old Romeo pretty dang lonesome.

Hell in my country the rubes kill just about anything that trees so they kill the female subs first. Well then the tom sub isn't fully alienated from his sister and he goes to scraping the country up like a mad man and and if a road hunter doesn't kill him next old El Gato Muy Grande better known as Daddy will get tired of his foolishness and kill him for spite. Lions have strange ways.

My best guess is: Like Mike said he was looking for a mate, hung around that area for a a few days to a week making scrapes maybe had a kill near by too. Got no answers to and went looking else where.

Since were on the topic of scrapes heres a funny scrape story. I tried to catch a tom once for 3 days in a row off of an elk kill. Actually he didnt kill it he just claimed it. It was mid winter and and the north slopes were frozen snow with the south slopes dry. When i found the kill it was in the bottom of a cold canyon and burried in the snow by the cat. It looked like the tom had been feeding on it for a couple of days when I found it. I trailed the tom up the north slope to the top of the ridge to the bare ground where under a pine tree in pine needles was the largest lion scrape in the history of lion scrapes. it was about 4 feet long and a foot or so high. Seems every time this tom passed this tree he addedd to his scrape making it one massive scrape. Each morning was the same scenario, i would trail him to his massive scrape (which kept getting bigger each day) then trail all over the mountainside never to even jump the cat.

But Im pretty sure I saw the biggest lion scape in the world!! LOL

This may be a partial clue to why for the big scrape or the scrape over as I call them when they hit the same scrape area and then some of these scrapes are made more like (Dare marks) Really digging in and kicking back, rather than just a squat, shuffle, gaze in the distance and move out scrape.

Ok another guess. Might have been a young lion. Ive seen where young toms will scrape the hell out of places. I always figured that they were just starting to feel the oats.

If it was in NM i would say he has'nt been back cuzz he's dead!

I also failed to mention everytime I try to guess what a lion is doing im always wrong!!!

I know the young toms here will sure leave a lot of scrapes. I've also noticed that they quit making them in a few months. With our no hound hunting law I figured they quit because the big El Gato asked them to do it elsewhere :)
