Dennis,
I think you should go hunt Spanish Fork canyon. If you hunted there in the 70's you may find it's changed a bit but I won't ruin the surprise for you.
Let me know if it's like you remember. (Sorry you can't see me laughing here)
Go check Spanish Fork canyon out this winter and let me know what you think.
I remember when a guy showed me his secret spot up that canyon. Told me to keep it quiet because it was a secret honey hole.
Next time in there we got beat by some guys from Moab. Then a week later we got beat in there by some guys from Kamas. Then some guys from Salt Lake, then a guy from Tremonton, then more guys from Salt Lake, then some guys from Price, then the guy from Moab again.
After that I found a new "honey hole."
Let me know how Sp. Fork canyon goes for you. I'll be anxious to hear your report.
Best kept secret in the State.

Re: lions and elk
Ike wrote:I got a call from a co-worker over the weekend that he had been sitting there watching a lion for half an hour and wondered if I had a kill tag for that unit, lol. This guy is as serious a deer hunter as I've ever met, lives and breaths it, all he does, scouts most weekends year round and most likely a tough, top-of-the-line hunter. But I suppose his real interest wasn't in me running down and harvesting a lion but rather in getting rids of another deer eatin predator...............![]()
Little did he know I was across the state at a family gathering and 350 miles from my hounds. Presently, it is the season of the elk and a guy most likely shouldn't have a pack of hounds running loose this time of year even though lion is open. Think I'll wait for a low in the orange jackets before I stray to far with those hounds...................![]()
I did enjoy my drive back up Spanish Fork Canyon last night though, with the evening sun on the hills and the color and all. I remember hunting that country back in the late seventies and have often wondered about running back down there............
keep'em treed,

This is my second season in the basin and I was wondering about hunting during rifle season. I don't because I don't want dogs shot but last weekend I saw a guy with a dog box and dogs coming off the mountain.
Dennis,
I don't think it was me you ran into. It's a pretty rare thing for me to get over around Spanish Fork and haven't been in the canyon for quite a while.
Unless you were down around Payson, I don't think it was me. Not sure what you drive but I would have noticed the dog boxes I'm sure.
If the guy was friendly and nice, then it wasn't me for sure!!
Oh you can have at that canyon, I don't go in there much anymore. Lion hunting is comical in there these days. Kevin came down once and we went up there and it looked like opening day of the deer hunt but all the trucks had dog boxes. He was pretty shocked.
And I only went in there hunting twice for bear all year, so don't worry about stepping on my toes in that canyon. Two years ago we ran pretty hard in there for a couple of weeks but it was behind a locked gate.
But I sure like horse back riding in that country during the summer and fall. Some good country in there but come bear or lion season you will have competition and you better get out of bed early.
I used to hit that place pretty hard, but that ship has sailed. My buddy calls it "The Park"... and for good reason. Have at 'er dude!!
I won't be hunting anywhere for awhile since my dogs are going on a little bear hunt with my buddy until Thanksgiving. Only thing I'll be hunting until then is the remote.
