I have hunted one day with Dave Carlson and really learned alot. So I would hunt with him but I would also like to hunt with Richard Holcomb.

Mine would probably be Ben Lilly....But, man from the stories I've heard I'd have to brush up on my "hiking your butt off" skills....I'd get a real kick out of listening to him and watching dogs work/hunt

My fantasy hunt would be with Dale Lee in Mexico on a Jaguar hunt. The thought of it just gets me all kinds of excited!! LOL! Other than that I have made lots of friends across the country I would like to hunt with again for a week. I was hoping to bump into Ike in Utah when I come out on the all blue hunt but I haven't been able to make it the last couple years.
Memorial Day weekend I usually get thrown into that family deal, but if you get out this way, and know you're coming, give me a shout and I'll make it over for a hunt or two..........

I would really like that. I bought a couple of business's almost 2 years ago and it's harder to get away now but I would like to get back out there and see Wally and a couple others I have met along the way. Maybe this year will be the year.

John Stebly from Idaho. A guy would have to spend a 100 years with him to learn it all. He has forgot more about hunting then most will learn!

mike i have hunted a lot with bruce nay, van johnson,and greg anderson! i think i would like to hunt with all 3 of them plus george nay and hal when they all was about 35 and in there prime! hunt horse back in the bookcliffs with all 5 of them i know u cant find better houndsman and the stories would be great and u would laugh ur a$$ off in camp with them!
at the end of every track is a animal!

I have been lucky enough to meet all of those you mentioned and sure some hunting experience in that group.
I guess it's time for me to throw my two cents into my own questions.
I have thought long and hard on this one and there are so many I would love to be able to spend time with in the woods. My great friend Wiley Carroll, or possibly one of my mentors Steve Matthes, or Clell or Dale or Dub just so many but I am going to pin it down to just two,one that has passed on and one who is still alive.
Froem the past: I would love to have spent a week hunting with Giles Goswick of Mayer, Arizona. Why? well Gile's method of hunting is much more akin to me than say Ben Lilly who walked everywhere and slept standing up most of the time.Giles was a cowman and a horsemen, but first and foremost he was a houndman of the highest order and argueably the greatest single lion hunter Arizona ever knew. His catches are a matter of record he was the man they called to catch the bad ones in the toughest places imaginable. His dogs were highly sought after and built the foundation of many other great early houndsman pack not the least to mention Wiley Carroll. Giles had such a repore and love of his hound that even though he had a house and a warm bed to sleep in many times he would just lay down out in the yard among the hounds and sleep where he was the most comfortable. I spoke with a man many times that hunted with him for years and he described a normal day on the ranch like this.
We would plan to go work some cattle and get geared up to go and saddle up and head out. Well Gile's hound went everywhere he went, so they trotted along. Well if they crossed even the faint cold trail of a lion and let out a bawl that was it. No more cow work the lion hunt was on and he said you could jusr see old Giles smile when old Red hit that track. Now if they didn't catch that lion that day that was of no concern as long as they moved the track in the right direction and made progress. Night comes we just lay down under our Arizona Blanket(which is a starry sky) and get right back on the track in the morning until we got the lion. Giles did a lot for lion hunting and passed it on to the next generation in his som also a very famous lion hunter George Goswick. You can read about George in Harley Shaw's fine book ( Soul Among Lions). Giles also thru his dogs all those years later helped give me the boost I needed to really start catching lions on the dirt when I was able to get some of that old blood from his relatives. So my pick GILES GOSWICK
My living choice and this is equally hard for there are so many great lion hunters to choose from but I have made my choice and it would be that long tall drink of water from the tall cactus country of Arizona Steve Smith. Steve a protegee of Dale Lee is all lion hunter all 6'-6" of him and he means business. His catches in the worst of country range in the many hundreds and his pack is of the finest quality. Steve again much like Giles before him is a rancher and has a fine outfit but cows come second to lions and hounds. Another reason i chose Steve is we have spent some time together and we enjoy a lot of the same things. We both like to Dutch oven cook, and we like to eat, and we like bang around on the old guitar and yodel and howl at the moon and the coyotes. LOL! Actually Steve is a fine musician and songwriter.
His stories of times learning under Dale Lee will have you rolling on the ground.
So there you go....

Montague Stevens. The man was highly intelligent and enjoyed a good horse as much as a great dog of any breed. That and his humor would be enough for me to have a great time. I appreciated his way of sifting through the shit to get at the facts then taking those and using them to his advantage. Add to that any man with one arm willing to tangle with grizzly in the aspens has his share of courage and then some which is a damn fine trait and easier seen then heard.

My Lion Hunting has been limited to some Saddle sores earned on a big ranch north of Prescott that really was several great Days Trail Riding although I did not often see a trail! I Hunted with one of Steve Smiths desciples. The stories about Steve and his Hounds were like reading an old Zane Grey novel. And stumbling around the Canyons around Capitan, NM without my Mule (Bad Move) with our new neighbor George Hobbs.
Come to find out Dad had Lion Hunted with Steve over on Cherry Creek in the late 80s, and had some great stories to tell. Dad was impresed with Steve as a Houndsman and Hunter. The same Dedication and Tenacity that Dad wares like an old shirt are evident in Steve.
Steve or his mentor Larry Hendrickson (sp) from all I know( which ain't much) would be who I would want to spend a week Lion Hunting with, to learn about their Hound breeding as much as their Lion Hunting skills and lore!
Two names not much heard of!

My vote would go to Giles Goswick as well on the non living side. For all the reasons that Mike L mentioned above.
As far as living, would have to be Sam Dieringer. (yes that is how his last name is spelled) I've had the priviledge of hunting with Sam twice. Sam is unlike most of the houndsmen that have been mentioned. He won't have you rolling on the ground from all the great stories he tells..(not that he doesn't have them, he just doesn't tell them often) however, if one was so fortunate to spend a week with this houndsman, being a silent observer may be the best thing you could ever do for yourself and your hounds. His dog handling skills are amazing, and the relationship that he shares with his dogs is quite amazing to watch. Forget about the numbers of lions that he catches, he'd never share numbers with you anyway. I hope to someday be half the houndsman Sam is.
With that being said, I will also mention several of the folks on this site that I only know through conversation and reading posts. I'll hopefully be hunting with Mike Leonard this fall. I'd love to hunt with some of the guys in Utah and Colorado. Dean Hendrickson, Joe Troyer in NM, Jeff Allen... just to name a few...

I would have to say as far as non living,I would have to go with a few.Of course the Lee Bros.,Giles,L.Shelley and Ben Lilly just to name a few.Now for the living,There is alot of people I would love to meet and hunt with.But I will keep it local and say either Warner Glenn,Jonathan Kibler or Jerry Smith.

i'm torn. on top of who everyone has mentioned add to that Del Hannah, Gordon Larson, Mont Plott & wolfing w/ John Abernethy or maybe catching elk, antelope & bison w/ Custer. then w/ in keeping w/ the jessica & demi votes, i'm thinking ALL the telemundo babes like Sofia Vegara for a month. man i'd need a whole year to spend a week w/ everyone.
