LION KILL
I found a lion kill today at work. It was an atelope doe. I found where the lion had drug her for probably 50 to60 yards then started to feed on her. The funny thing is she only ate the utter. Then threw just a little grass on her to cover it. She left it in the wide open but nothing had found it before I did. I know it was killed last night because it was laying in a path we mowed the day before. And I did see the track so i know its a lion. This is the fourth or fifth antelope killed in this same little area with in the past year. As far as I know none of these antelope have been cleaned up or finished by the lion.
Has anyone else had any dealings with this type of situation? I was just wondering if they treat them like they would treat goats.
Im going back out to take some pics. of the country and the kill even though I moved the kill so noone else would find it. But its still close enough if she comes back for it she will find it.

Re: LION KILL
Hmmm? I have found plenty of antelope killed by lions. Look around there Joe if she had a kid, the lion ate it and is on it, and killed her blowing snot and will come back and slick her up. That kid smelled stong on the titts. Take that old red dog up there and you just might find that cat pretty close. Coyotes will move in pretty quick though so watch for them.

Re: LION KILL
Ive seen lions do this but mainly on domestic animals. It always seems to be in the hot months which of coarse is the same time utters are full of milk. The meat spoils fast in the summer and I always figured thats why they dont come back and eat more. Utters must be pretty tasty to a bear and lion.

Re: LION KILL
Well the kids(3) were still hangin around the same general area. I was thinking that she might have had another kill around there. The real down side is Im workin at the NRA Whittington Center and they willnot let me do any hunting.
The kill was even made on one of the ranges! I went out right at dark and the birds had found it. But I will be out there first thing tommorow and check and see if she returned.

Re: LION KILL
Lil Joe, I have sheep and goats on my ranch, but all the lions around here eat horses. I have sheep running free around the ranch, but they must not taste good, because the cats wont even think about killing them. I've lost 7 colts and 2 Mares to lions in the last 9 months. Whats funny is that the lions only eat the belly out, then they put grass over it and dont seem to come back for more. Why do you think that is Mike? Do you think it is a female with kittens? I sure am curious. Seem to find one about every two weeks lately. I did find a scratching post that i have never seen before and looks to me like the lion is hitting it on a weekly basis. I've heard that once a lion has tasted horse he wont eat anything else, What do you guys think?

Re: LION KILL
HUntintony, when a lion does decide to eat sheep, you can loose up to 20 in a night I am not sure about the horses though. In my area the last 5 years not one horse was touched and then this year 3 ponies where killed within a month. all the kills within 5 miles of my house. The culprites were one good tom , one 200lb tom and a female with kittens. You defienatly have a problem.

Re: LION KILL
Joe,
Watch those kids they will be fast food in a few days they will lead you to the lion. Are you on the northeast side ranges or back closer to the creek on the cut over on the left or westside. If so on the west she will lay up pretty close to the water specially if she has subs or kittens. I been all over that range and lion sign was thick.
Tony,
I would bet money it is a mature female and she has subs but living must be pretty easy out there and at times they kill more than they can handle in hot weather. I wish we could trap a few of them horse eating lions and bring them out here and llet them teach these elk killers out here just how good horse meat really is and maybe we could thin down this BLM herd that is way out of control. Seldom do they kill a horse and they are among them all the time out here.
Sheep I had a co worker tell me that a lion killed 26 of his mother's sheep last year in a flash with her standing there watching with no gun. She had two subs with her and they were practicing. Sheep gotta be good for something. LOL! Never ate on any of them went off and killed a mule deer doe.

Re: LION KILL
My buddy has some sheep up on his property on the mountain right now and a lion has been putting a hurtin' on them. His Mexican herder called a week or two ago and my buddy called me. I ran up to have a look and there were 7 or 8 sheep piled up all right there together... just sport killed, didn't eat any of them.
I stuck a trail camera right there and a couple of hours later a lion walked right through my camera.
Guilty as charged!!
This is about the third pile of dead sheep they've found and I told my buddy, "In this steep, thick country you can bet you aren't finding all of them."
So a couple of days ago they gathered them all up and counted. They are missing 150 sheep. Ouch!!
Now some of them could have wandered off, who knows? But I told my buddy if he kills another 30 or 40 we might have to go do something about that.
(I'm not a big fan of domestic sheep)
But this particular lion seems way more interested in killing than he does eating. I told BNG a lion was in there stacking sheep and he said, "Good!" Another big sheep lover I guess.

I was always a bit skeptical about the "sport killing" stories I'd heard but no more... seen it with my own two blood-shot eyes now.

We call them "Mountain Maggots" here! Can't say as I blame the Bear or Lion, the incessant din those M&M's create is insane.

Re: LION KILL
Well she came back last night and ate one front shoulder and left again. She never bothered to cover her up any. I found where she walked down a sandy bar ditch she isnt a real big lion maybe 80 lbs or so. The boss is having a hard time keeping me workin. Espicialy since this is my last week. Its close enough to hunting season Im out of there!!
Mike,
This doe was killed on the 1,000 yard range. I agree this country is loaded with lions. I grew up on the NRA property. Dad was head of construction for 25 years. In that time we got to do quite a bit of lion hunting here. One year we killed 7 lions on 33,000 acers. Thats a pretty good pop. if you ask me. Dad killed two lions in the 80's that went B&C off of the same property. Im just waitin till I get to start hunting it again

Re: LION KILL
I don't get some of these cut and paste deal , but whatever.Anyway Joe I know right where you mean. Pretty neat piece of heaven right there and if you folks are not NRA memebers you should be and then just show up and they will give you the grand tour.
Funny deal Joe. We had this sporting clay shoot out there and we all got fired up on the five stand there right along the road on the left the night before. Well I stay on the range when I go but anyway the next day we are going thru the shoot and the bulls back to the north were just having a hay day it was that time of year. Not anywhere I know you can stand with shotguns going off right and left and still hear the bull elk screaming in the background. I would set up in the evening at one of those octagonal sleeping wuarters with my spotting scope on the deck and we would watch antelope, deer, coyotes and have a ball. It's a good place!
