Here is Duke, a pup that I raised myself. I dont raise many litters but I had to make this cross. This pup is about half Smoke/Bert Emett blood and half Stan Mecham with a touch of Jeff Allan. I talked to Bert about a week ago and he told me this pups 4 generation pedigree (top side) off the top of his head and he told me he has records that go all the way back to when his dad Smoke and Jack Butler made some crosses and even before that. He told me he could go clear back to his dads dogs in the 1940's from this pup. This pup also goes back to an old black female that Jeff Allan and Stan Mecham had that was half blood hound. Both of these guys tell me that some of the best cold trailing dogs that they have ever seen came from her. Just some good old Southern Utah dry ground blood flowing through this pups veins. Should be a fun ride with Duke.
Thanks guys, one of the things that make this hound thing so much fun is to learn of the history behind these dogs. That is one of the things that really draws me to these old big game bloodlines that were used and are still used by these old lion hunters. Its alot of fun talking to guys like Bert and Stan and hearing them say, "If he turns out like his dad Tick or his grandfather Buck then you will really have something." or, like Stan said, "If he can trail like ol' Moke and Buck then that dog will be one of the best you'll ever have." This pup may not amount to a hill of beans and I know that there is always that chance, but I like my chances. It sure is fun talking it over with the guys that have spent a lifetime just keeping the old stuff going.
Yep Duke is the kind. Keep me posted on his progress.
Not a great deal of the direct dogs out of the black female you talked about left around. Many great ones such as my Big Nosed Kate who was sired by ACE have left for the happy hunting grounds. Mr. Jiggs is still here and we had dinner together a little bit ago on the patio. He is fit as a fiddle and in his prime , his mother was that black female and his sire was Jeff's Hank dog. He is a machine!
Very true Mike! I know of one other dog directly out of her and that is all that I know of, but there has to be a few more around. Stan had a direct daughter out of her that was a real producer as well and her name is Bess. Stan said he got around 48 pups out of her before he sold her and him and his boys have hand full of them. Bess is now down is Az. I believe.
