Summer hunt in Sanderson , Texas

I sold my bobcat dogs, all but my best 2 and have a couple of dry ground lion dogs on trial and went to Sanderson Texas. Dry and hot as hell. We woke up at 4:30 in the morning and saddled mules and collared dogs and rode this big nasty canyon and my best bobcat started upon the side of a bluff about 7:00 am and cold trailed it for a long time and finally the other dogs got in and started helping and they bayed up in a big rock pile, so I booked it up the Bluff wall of rocks, wanting to kill a lion so bad I can taste it and arrived on the dogs all bayed up in some rocks that fell off of the rim, just to find a skinny old bobcat. But after that we could not get that cat out of the hole because the hole was to narrow, so we left it and pulled dogs off of it and petted them up. So this canyon circles around and with my garmin I marked camp and could tell we was 2 miles from camp If we just found away out of the canyon. So we went along down the canyon until we found a spot to rim out. I was on my mule and took off up this canyon wall and made it to the top with my mule, all most running over me on the way up. The guy I was with was still at the bottom and his mule would not budge, so I hobbled my mule and went down to get his mule to the top. We had his mule almost to the top when it fell and roled down the bluff. Man I pulled out my pistol and was on my way to finish of the mule when he just stood up and nothing was wrong. So Jimmy took off back down the cayon to the truck and I went camp and tied all the dogs up under what shade I could find. When Jimmy arrived we watered all the dogs and ate lunch and finished checking all dogs water. Jimmy bought one of my bobcat dogs off of me that was making a hell of a dog. Jimmy came up to me and said Ninja is dead, The dog wrapped his chain around and small stick, and had a foot of chain to the stick and was dead. It was really hot and the sun got the best of him in about one hour. If you are hunting right know you better watch your dogs and water them alot cause I have seen what the heat will do. But Jimmy has the wost luck. happy hunting

Smith, I have been there, done that, and don't want anymore of it. Surely it is better in the winter, but if not go to the mountains.

Dang, sorry to hear 'bout Ninja. How's the dog from Riley doing?

That dog from Rilley is a very good dog. He let me put her on trial and I picked her up and gave her a flea and tick bath and found little nots all over, so I called Rilley and told him about them and he said I could just have her. But that doesn't slow her down any. I mean Gordo and her make a team. How is Gus and them doing?

Where are you going around Sanderson where you don't have a problem with dog pear? Have hunted there and have a real problem with that stuff.

We Hunted between Sanderson and Dryden but south 30 miles towards the rio grand and yes in some places the dog pear was really bad. Down in the big rocky canyons there are no dog pear but a bunch of lions. There where kills and tracks every where. That is also Mr. Miller that I am talking about.

Riley is a dang good guy and a legend in hounds and good quarter horses. I have some old black and whites that Riley gave me of his kin from years back that shows surely the hounding tradition has been a long standing theing in the Miller family. Ya'll tell the last of the Buffalo Hunters Riley old Leonard from New Mexico says Howdy!

I have a dogs from Riley, She is a red dog, don't know much about how they are bred, but I know that if Riley had them, they are some nice dogs. How are your dogs doing you got from him?

oh I forgot about the pics that Riley has, pics of the Lee brothers with lions, Jaguars, and oscelotes. I looked at pics out of 2 big photo albulms for about a hour. Even Riley with one of the brothers when he was real old. One picture was one of the Brothers in a boat with 3 or 4 hounds and 2 jags laying with there head hanging out of the boat and a bag of dog food he was advertising for, you could tell the 2 cats was a male and a female, but huge heads on them. Awsome pics, can not describe them.

Yes sir that country is tough and rough. As a rule, scent does not hang around most of the time, as it is over 100 degrees and the wind blowing over 30 mph. I do like to hunt it but not in the summer months. Sounds like you were hunting on Dudley Harrison's country along the river or perhaps Pinky Caruthers. There are not many big ranches left down there after that bunch of subdividers from Kerrville got finished...makes me sick.

Pinky had some ranch property down by Hondo/Picacho, New Mexico as well. Pretty good deer an audad hunting down there. He is related I think to Gary who use to be Governor of New Mexico. Gary has another brother out here on the Animas and I can't remember his name but I use to coon hunt on him. No dog pear there but sand burrs WOW! it was bad!

Do you Texas boys have a hard time getting permission to run lion and cat in your state, or are the ranchers eager to have houndsmen get after their predators?

Here in California, most of the ranchers I know could care less if I hunt bobcats and let me have at 'em.

I can get on more country than I can hunt in West and parts of South Texas but then I personally know the ranchers. If a hunter was to come in here cold turkey, he would be out of luck as they are very picky about who they let on their country.

I know about the sand spurs and hate them too. Don't know if he is related to the ex-Gov or not.
