Wyoming chase season?

Post by r_cordell »

I was wondering if it is legal to chase lions in wyoming in a unit where the quota is filled already. Couldn't ever find in the regulations that said one way or the other. Thought maybe some of you wyoming guys could help me out. Thanks.

I assume you were thinking the black hills, since it's the only area in the state that's closed already. Pretty bad when almost entire quota is filled on one snow event. We need a pursuit season, plus break up the hills into smaller units.

That's pretty crazy that units 1 and 30 closed in 5 or 6 days. Thats really not that big of an area to kill that many cats that fast. Seems like the game department would change things up a little bit.

the WY Stockman Growers run the show when it comes to WY predators, try convincing them they need to conserve predators lol The Casper mountain unit usually never closes there's a place to go chase lol

I don't know what this years quota was comprised of, but most years very few cats over 3 yo are killed in that area on both sides of the state line. Maybe folks need to stop shooting every cat that climbs in that country. I will check in the next few days to see what harvest looks like. Hopefully I will have to eat my words, I doubt it though.

Yep, you guys are right on ... when is the WYGF going to manage the wildlife of this state instead of letting stockmen dictate every facet. Last year they killed 34 lions in the other area I hunt, 25 the year before.. and it's not that big of an area. If the quota is nearly filled one year, the next year it gets bumped up 10 lions. I'm not to optimistic about finding much for tracks this year.
wwy - how are you going to find out age class of this years harvest ? The only thing I know is talk to wardens who register lions, or wait for lion report to come out, but that won't be till next fall. I know your right though, we ran into some guys who had just drug a 75 lb. female to the road the other day.

A friend of mine used to go to WY to mule deer hunt and they got to talking to the owner of the ranch about coming out and hunting lions. The rancher said that would be fine and told them "his rules" on the ranch as far as lion hunting went. No toms could be killed since they would eat kittens. Females only and they had to kill everyone they treed and that he would find someone with a tag or bury them!! He said he would kick them off the lease if he found out that they killed a tom or let a female go. Needless to say he didn't go out there lion hunting. He said that the rancher told them that all the other ranchers around him ran the same "program".
