What shocking and tracking collars to get?

I am 18 and live in Montana and am new to hounds just got my first two dogs. I was wondering what people would recommend for shocking and tracking collars? Or what people would recommend to get to help my operations run smoother when it comes to my dogs?

I would buy quick track tracking collars and tri-tronics classic 70's shock unit

Cole - I've got the tritronics Classic 70 G3. It has worked flawlessly for what it was designed to do. It is ablolutely no replacement for time and personal interaction. I just can't stress that enough. I got one and thought "my dogs are now trash broke". Well, that was bullshit. I soon found that nothing was working. I got to reading and asking questions on this board and several experienced guys helped out. Teach the simple things(sit, stay, come, and so on). I still use the collars some to just get their attention if things get out of hand. The more time I spend, the less things get out of hand.

You've probably read on here several different opinions on the Garmin Astro. In our country I get up to 6 mile readings and down to a few hundred yards at times. We have enough hills and ridges that sooner or later you or your dogs are on one and you will get a signal. I ran mine all last year and so did a friend of mine. He broke one of the on/off switches on his DC-20 collar. That is the only problem we had. It gives you a really good idea what your dogs are doing, and that is a good thing especially if you've got young dogs. I use the DC20 collars and have no problem with them. I really don't think the DC30's are worth the extra money. Just counterweight the collar and you're off!

I run a tritronics trash breaker it has a 2 mile range
Also I run a marshall 4000 reciever and johnson D size tracking collars
Never had a problem

Tri Tronics Trash breaker Ultra.. listed 2 mile range... I know for sure they will reach over 1 mile..
A very good friend of mine had another brand (Well advertised too) and it only got about 100 yards... got the old trashbreaker and used it for years... it finally died then he got a Classic 70 new from the factory--- it does not get that full mile range advertised.. Go with the Trashbreaker Ultra,

I would like to see more dependability on the garmin.. Believe it will come, but on the regular trackers I have an ATS 16 ch... with it the Johnson D collars are the strongest,(ahead of ATS & wildlife)But I have seen a Marshall and it was a lot easier to operate... I would go that way before any other

I use any collar were I can change my own battery, I also use a quick track receiver, the only problem is you can't get it to wet, and I use a SPORT DOG shocker set up. I don't bow to the tri-tronics god. They make a really good product and have great customer service and you don't pay near as much. Which one of those pups did you and your dad end up with? they were both good lookin pups. Good luck geating set up.

I'm brand new to Montana and I'm in the same boat, looking into what tracking collars to get. Sheimer, can we use Garmins here? Maybe you guys can point to where the fish and game regs talk about tracking devices. Haven't found it yet.

As said above Tri-Tronics training collars. Wildlife telemetry collars for me. I know a lot of guys use Johnson as well as the Marshall collars. All have very good success.
I too like the ability to change my batteries in the field when needed!

Be very careful using Wildlife injected mold collars and Garmin GPS collars.
I have found over the last 11 months that, using Wildlife injected mold collars, once you lose communication with the Garmin you do not get it back unless you remove the Garmin collar for about 5 minutes.
Wildlife has told me that the injected mold collars have a much higher output signal that their older collars.
I have had to switch to all Johnson collars.

Sport dog has been good to me, just make sure you keep an extra battery on you just incase. Garmin has been good to me make sure you get the long range antenna, I have had the hounds out 7 miles and it still was reaching out.
