Quite a story.

My brother had a similar incedent with a bear this weekend. He had killed a deer with his bow and while he was gutting it the bear popped up about 40 ft away. Disappeared and popped up again closer and down wind. He said he nocked an arrow and watched him till he slipped away. He finished his clean-up and got to his radio called the dog truck. An hour later and the dogs couldn't run it. Which was surprising. Went on to tree a sow and cubs and another good run. Neither were the bear my brother saw.

Once KevD gets done watching the Bachelor maybe he will log on. He has a great quote from a guy about how humans really have to watch their backs in the wild.... but what a coincidence, only during deer season....lol!

Hmm.. I had a incident like that some 8-10 years ago, before I had dogs or knew of anyone with dogs, me and a friend were camping/partiying in the woods in Central/Eastern Oregon, and decided to take a drive to get away from everyone around camp drinking you can only drink so many days.. We decided to go see if we could find some wildlife.

On the drive I spotted a Cat(Longtail) just sitting in this open meadow in the timber maybe 30-35yards off the road.. It was kinda one of those Double take situations that you stop the truck and say.. "did I just see that" .. and Sure enought we got out of the truck and it was a cat sitting there, .... figured we would "play" with it some. Grabbed some Pistols even though we didn't have any intention of shooting it, we could have easily done that from the side of the road, or several times.

As we approaced the cat about 20 yards it dropped down and walked off, But it didn't leave, It just did a half circle around us and was trying to stalk us, after about 5 minutes we realized that it was playing a much better game of Hide and seek than we were.. and that's when the hair starts raising on the back of your neck... :) We decided to get back in the truck and left it alone to play by it's self..

Sure Learned allot of Respect for them that day.

That cat was not afraid of us.. At all. Of coarse we didn't yell at it and rush it or anything, We were quitly stalking it seeing how close we could get to it, But we did walk straight at it and that didn't seam to intimidate it much. Pretty errie feeling looking behind you and trying to figure out how it circled you without you knowing or hearing it

I've seen several other cougars deer and elk hunting, and none of them hung around or acted like that one did every other cat was more than happy to get the hell out of there...

Around five years ago in southern colorado I was going for my morning walk from our cabin, which i did frequently, when I caught the site of a hind quarter through some scrub oak..Thinking it was a deer I side steped to get a better look, when i pulled up my binoculars I saw a tail whip.. I happened to be carrying a .25 auto, jacked one in and looked over my shoulder to see and get my bearings to the cabin.... I could see the top of the roof and it was only 150 yards away.. I slowly started to back up gun at arms length and tried to get a glimps of the cat again.. nothing! After about 15 to 20 yards of backing slowly i turned to head home when..... another cat aprox 15 yards to my right took off!....I was in the middle of mother and a yearling!... I later learned that a rancher shot both because they were harrasing his cattle..

Needless to say I dont walk as much as I used to--not unless I have a little heavier weapon... :)

I take my hound with me whenever I go in the woods, even if I'm just mushroom picking. Not much gets by him, and there's safety in numbers. Can't tell you how many times he's warned me about bears. Course, I sometimes have to pull him out from under one as a result. : ) Nonetheless, we don't have much in the way of big cats around here... We do have bobs, but none of those have ever stalked me--at least that I know of.

It has become a commom occurence in my neck of the woods.
This year while working in the woods I have seen cougars more than I can keep track of. had I known I was going to see so many I would of kept notes, I know its pushing close to the teens. I have lived and worked in the woods all of my life and had been lucky enough to have seen 2 cross the road in 34 years, this year was the exception, multiple times I found myself between a female and her kickoffs. thats not counting any the dogs may have "accidentlly" trashed on..

I walked out a ridge in about 2 inches of snow to listen for dogs and when I walked out there were lion tracks following me up. The tracks definately weren't there on the way up. Scared the shit out of me.

I was hunting Elk with my bow some years back in Idaho. Went down the ridge and then back up the side. Decided to turn around and go back down, within 4 or 5 steps i found where a cat had been tracking me, One cat track in each of mine. Had a very uneasy rest of the day, never saw another elk, what with looking tring to find the cat, very hair raising i can tell you.
