California Bear Hunting With Plotts

Post by Plott Proud »

I'm finally getting around to putting something up on the board. It's been fun!

Well, I was finally fortunate enough to catch a couple of weeks back (10/20/09). 3 times out, first catch. Seeing how it's only the 2nd track I've attempted to run, this isn't too bad.
Pictured below is NPHA member Dan Tichenor, myself and our friend Mark Hennelly who we caught the Bear for yesterday.

This Bear jumped as we arrived to the tree. I had a lot of young dogs there, and boy did that ever do them good to see that come out in front of them and run off. They all did a really great job. They put her back up about 100 yards or so farther down in the canyon.

As soon as they get done working on this house, I'll get to hit the timber hard & heavy!

Take it easy!

Well I got out again over the weekend and we were once again successful. This was a very good day with the young dogs getting a lot of good work in! The hunt consisted of All CHC members as well as NPHA members. With the lone exception of Neil Dunn. Who is really liking the way the Brindle dogs work! I don't think it will be long now!! I'm working on him and these Plott's are doing their own convincing!

We started this track at about 9:00 Sunday morning 11-01. I didn't know it at first, but it was NPHA member Dan Tichenor's birthday.

The dogs got treed and then it sounded like some of them left in a different direction. Well, after we got there we saw that they had. We had half the pack here with this yearling and the other half left after the sow and put her up farther down the canyon. By the time we got out of the bottom of that canyon and back to the truck, and then back down into the canyon again farther down the road, it had been about 3 hours or so.

The pack of young Plotts as well as two dogs of Neil's were still playing that sweet tune that we all love to hear!!
At the 2nd tree, I was getting across the creek at the bottom of the canyon when the sow jumped. It was on again. This time to only be worked by the cunning momma bear. I didn't get any pics of that tree, only video.

In this photo is my year old dog, Rebel Pride Stonewall Jackson up front. Dan's dog Tichenor's Cheyenne sitting behind him. Cheyenne is a littermate to my Magnum dog out of Pocahontas Cody II and Mississippi Mud Dozer that was killed a few years back.

100 pound yearling in the tree. Can you see it? The sun wasn't cooperating for the pics of the BEar very well.

Another pic of the yearling. It's about halfway up. Do you see it?

This is what it's all about. Good hunts made possible by good friends, good Plott dogs, and most of all THE GOOD LORD!

I hope your hunts are as successful, and the memories they leave with you are as treasured as are mine!
