The third report of a mountain lion sighting in Logan in the past month has authorities warning residents to be careful with themselves and their pets, especially overnight.
Last month, police received two reports of a mountain lion sighting, with one in the Cliffside neighborhood and one in the Sumac neighborhood on the Island. Police received another report over the weekend of a mountain lion sighting, this time on the west side of town. Some residents reportedly saw the animal near 600 North and 400 West.
“We did have a mountain lion sighting reported,” Logan Police Capt. Jeff Curtis said Monday. “We responded down to the area where it had been observed, but … we kind of got the call in from a third-party.”
Curtis said police were able to locate neither the animal nor the people who reported actually seeing the cat. Curtis said there wasn’t enough snow on the ground at the time of the report to allow police to look for tracks, so officials hit a dead end in the search. If anyone is able to find mountain lion tracks, Curtis said, the Department of Natural Resources would be called in to track the animal and try to capture it.
Because there have been multiple reports of a mountain lion around town, Curtis said, residents should be aware and careful when they are out at night.
“It’s a little easier this time of year because we don’t have a lot of little kids out playing,” Curtis said. “You want to make sure that little kids aren’t out and that your pets are in a controlled area, hopefully one the animal can’t get into, if it’s there in the area.”
With that warning, however, Curtis said he didn’t want to scare residents.
“We obviously don’t want people scared to walk around in Logan, but they need to know that there has been the sighting,” he said. “(However,) we haven’t had any aggression shown by the animal at this point in time towards people.”
If anyone does have information about a mountain lion sighting they should contact authorities at 716-9400.
