houndmen/money?

ill start with i know this is not everyone and it is not just hound guys.

why do so many people get hung up on trying to make money off of everything they do or have. a lot of times on someones lack of knowledge. i have seen it ruin peoples hunting relationships. selling equipment thats old for the price of new, dogs that should have turned 22, and somehow feeling good when they go to bed at night. if someone told me they wanted to make honest money i think the last thing i would tell them is get yourself a pack of hounds and a credit card and go wear out set after set of tires. i just think it is strange people worrying about money when were not professional hunters. aint this supposed to be fun?

I think you got to find an even, you cant lose yourself in just making money but you cant also not try to make money at times, lets be honest this thing called hound hunting has its expensive and it isnt a cheap hobbie/living to have. I dont see a problem making money but Im more in it for the fun of the chase and just watching dogs you've worked with for so long work a track (even if its a deer, haha). To each his own I guess

ive seen guys ship dogs from here for 1500-2000$ young dogs that had been hunted a lot and should have turned 22. people sometimes think they have to get the money back that they have in a dog instead of cutting thier losses. i picture some kid or young guy with all he can afford saved up with high hopes getting it based on word or name and it is a pretty sad deal for 1 party involved.

I agree...I think if anyone does this to make money he is crazy but I also think if somebody wants to sell something and purposefully looses money...he's crazy. That's the beauty of capitalism, two parties can agree on something and do the deal. If a guy paid X for something and the seller backs it up, NOBODY got screwed no matter what it sold for...

I think your are talking about making money off of cull dogs? Not sure if my interpretation is correct.

Use comman sense and do your homework.. That helps a lot.. I'm not sure why some people can't just deal with it and take care of the problem correctly.. but whatever..I don't think houndsmen are particularly worse then any other group.. it's just this is what we see the most as we are the one's dumb enough to be in this lifestyle.

It's an expensive sport at best.. People who have figured out how to make honest money from it.. Kudos to you.. And I do think that poeple can sell what they want for whatever they want.. We are the ones stupid enough to buy it

Oh yeah I'm still around.. Just don't have as much time to be on here anymore now that I don't sit in front of a computer for 8 hours a day

Melanie, agree with you, except on the common sense thing. Hound people and common sense??? We wouldn't be doin this if we had any sense let alone common sense.

I sale everything.... hounds, horses, trucks, trailers, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, tracking systems, shock systems. Pretty much anything i have bought gets put up for sale to pay for expenses.

I "think" that i am honest in my dealing with people. But what i really like is when you have something for sale and the buyer is trying to get you to tell them it's something that it is not.....what the hell? I don't know if i'm the only one that has had this happen or not but it happens more times then not. I try to "clarify" what im sellin and what i know, not what i think it will do. People are crazy, and i think that everyone has different expectations.

I don't think making money off of a hobby is a bad thing. If you think about it the alot of the good hounds we run have blood lines back to the lee brothers, cameron, lilly these people all made their living with these hounds and that is why their hounds where so good and passed the genetics down to the dogs we have today. but i also think they should deal fairly which i think they are. For what has went into these hounds i think the hounds i have priced out have been a fair deal. just my two cents.

i agree about people putting the screws to the new guys,seeing that im a new guy to the sport.ive been burnt twice on dogs that were the greatest dogs around,not knowing any better i bought them.one of the dogs wont come back spent all day trying to catch him whenever i brought him out,the other was affird of everything!spent alot of money on them for nothing,i now sold them to someone as pets not hunters and bought a pup that im going to try and train myself,with the help of different hunting sites.

Young guys need to watch for key words like pack dog on any dog over 2 years old to me pack dog usualy = cull dog if it is coming from an experienced hunter that new how to hunt the dog. Exception might be for hog and bear dogs where guys will dump extra dogs in to hold a bay.Other might be guy had two many dogs and coudnt hunt them all right.Most honest guys will give these kind of dogs away for free or cull the dog.

if you are talking about those who profit by selling cull dogs, make sure you hunt with anyone you get a dog from. Hunt with the dog and check them out before you buy. Its best to buy a dog you know. Seems pretty simple. When i didn;t do this, i had some very mediocre dogs. Now I have some much better ones by simply following this rule.

Here's what i have found at trying to sell a dog. The more money you ask for the dog the quicker it will sell. for some reason nobody will even look at a dog for $200 but if you were to put $1,000 on the same dog it would be sold in 5 minutes. i recently tried selling my German shorthair pointer for what i had in to the dog with training and what ever else. i posted him for $600 and not one call. i wasn't trying to sell him to rip anyone off i was trying to be fair. the dog did everything i said it would do but i should have put $2,000 on him he would have sold a lot faster. i ended up basically giving away a real good pointing dog for about nothing but at least the dog is being hunted.
