Ore. wildlife agents kill bear that visited house

VENETA, Ore. -- Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife agents have trapped and killed a 150-pound black bear that became a too-regular visitor to a rural home in the Veneta area west of Eugene.

Agents say the bear had killed several chickens in a coop on the property and on Monday nudged open a not-quite-closed door to the house. Biologist Brian Wolfer says they found muddy paw prints from the bear on four windows and a door and it was apparent the bear had been looking in the windows on more than one occasion. Wolfer says the bear was a safety concern.

He said wildlife agents killed the bear Tuesday after capturing it because it's not safe to just relocate a bear that is habituated to people. He adds that adult bears typically can't adjust to captivity.
