Lessons.....

Post by BigGameHunter »

Last Saturday I went out to see if I could find a kitty track to run. I ended up cutting a 2 night old track. Conditions were pretty good and I didn't end up cutting anything else so I came back and dumped 2 dogs on this old track. Looked like a dandy Tom. The dogs went out screaming and I thought to myself.....I got this one. Wrong. Seems like whenever I dump and prematurely think that I have the cat caught, they seem to give me a reminder. It's called don't get to confident and appreciate every catch you make; even the popups. This cat ended up being a Tom that was on the move. He went through one large drainage and into some new country. I ended up coming off the mountian down to town and back up on the other side of the drainage. When I finally found where the dogs had come through, the cat was still a blown in 2 day track. At this point the the GPS was telling me that the last spot it had picked them up was 15.3 miles from where I had turned out. I had lost the dogs on the GPS and thought they must have turned around and headed back to the turn out spot. Wrong again. When I got down off the mountian, I had a voicemail on my cell from a buddy of mine who said they were just getting back to their truck after turning on a lion that morning when they heard dogs trailing the track they had turned on that morning. Luckily he picked them up and had them for me in town.

Reminder for the day for me. #1-When you turn out; expect to catch it but don't bet the house on it. #2- That lion might be right around the corner, or it might be 20 miles away. You never know...

One of the best statements ever made in the hound dog world...."You never know".

Glad you got them back safe. Sounds like a good friend to have.
