Lion Hunting

What happened to the fall and spring? Just as a guy gets that cool weather for running and is having fun mother nature dumps on him and he's wading around in a foot or two of snow and sub-zero temperatures. Those days get shorter and a man just has trouble getting the same amount of work done, and those old tracks are killers. Walking after those hounds for mile upon mile is over, as even a climb down into a deep canyon and back to see a lion becomes an adventure, but howls, bawls and chops of his hounds continue to pull him into places he would never care to go without them.

A foul-wheeler works great until the snow gets deep and crusty and saves on those legs a little, then the snow sleds come out and provide a whole new adventure that the old timers didn't have. A four-wheeled drive mule or horse would be nice but they don't come with chains or heaters. Just imagine what a joy it would be to go head over heals into a canyon with a man's old trusty steed.........

Many of you young tough bucks are probably enjoying the snow and frigid temperatures, but ol' Ike is dreaming of warmer, longer days. I have picked up a new hunting partner though, and he is young and tough and helps push his old man in weather that he'd rather sit by the fire in. I hope all of you guys are having a blast, just leave a few lions for next year on the way past.......

Ike I am with you I get where I cold weather and snow more every year. When I first found out I didn't need fridgid temperatures and snow to catch a lion it was a revelation. We don't usually get the real cold stuff for a long period here like further north but it is still too cold to be comfortable when you have had your hands and feet both frost bit over the years the circulation is not very good. I really like September, October, part of November and then March April for horseback hunting. At times you get good periods during those dead of winter months but not many. Problem is in NM you can't lion hunt except on private or the sheep units in Sept. or April.


I have heard more stories already this year of people losing dogs for many days in snowed in areas where they tried with snow mac hines even powder machines to get them out and has to pull out the big bucks and get choppers to flyu in and get the dogs. That runs the cost of this winter hunting way up there.

Same here Mike, I've heard of several people who have sent dogs into a hell hole and had trouble getting them out. I've had dogs after a couple of lions this winter and was the second day on the first lion getting to them and the third day on the next hunt; the temperature was -10 to -18 on the first hunt and around zero on te second. Hell I went and bought a second snow sled on the first lose and I hate that white stuff......

Well, if a guy is lucky maybe he'll get through the winter with all his hounds intact?

In order to address this problem, I've been thinking of building a retirement home for old lion hunters, somewhere in Arizona where it is warm, with a "spike camp" farther north in a cooler climate for the hot summer months. For the help, I was thinking of some of those "Hooters Girls" who are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city life. Let's see...cooked meals, made beds, hot tubs and warm weather, deluxe kennel accomodations...plus good scenery! Sounds like a plan. Anyone want to buy a time share there?

Sounds like a plan to me. I was in Arizona today and it was very pleasant weather , but just enough of a cool breeze to keep the Hooters girls..Hmm? well shall we say perky. LOL!

I'd say sign me up LionTracker but my wife probably wouldn't like me in the hot tub with those "Hooter Girls" ha! I will say if a guy provided that he could probably book all of his rooms and kennels though...

Call it a holistic lion hunter's retreat. a place to get together with like minded individuals and be dogs. Whoops! I mean talk dogs. LOL!

What's all this complaining about? Lion hunting is easy!! I went for a little hike around Thanksgiving, caught a tom on the dirt and had to shed clothes, it was so warm and nice. Did some pup training and was home by 2:00pm.

This weekend some guys found a lion track for me while I sat in the truck eating donuts. Turned loose on it, they went clear over the mountain. We went to the trucks and drove around and up the highway. Those guys all hiked to the tree (a couple to see their first lion) and I told them bring the dogs back with 'em!! I sat in the truck eating a Twix candy bar and I even got to see the lion run across the hill with dogs hot on his ass.

I did have to climb out of the truck to talk to some girls that pulled up. They could hear the dogs and I told them we had a lion caught. They got pretty nervous but I assured them they would be perfectly safe in the Cab of that blue hunting truck.

Once the guys showed up at the truck with the dogs, I told those gals the coast was clear and they were safe. Told them to go back and tell all their friends the legendary HoundDawg had saved the day and protected them from the Killer Tom of the Wasatch Badlands.

Then we hugged our goodbye's, shed a few tears and exchanged Facebook and Twitter information and I sent them on their way, loaded the dogs and hustled back into that warm truck. Not sure what the complaining is about. Lion hunting is a piece of cake.
