Thanks
Sorry B&Tman, my only camera is one of those disposable units I get from Walmart for $3.00, so you may have to wait until I shoot up another roll of film to get some pictures. :( But the frame on my dogsled is made out of thin 1" square tubing and the axle is made from 2" square tubing 3/16ths of an inch thick. I make the hitch out of a piece of pipe with a rod running through it and a spring on each end.

I did make one out of aluminum a couple years back.....but I learned I suck at welding aluminum. Most of my welds broke the first trip out so it is still sitting out in the barn waiting for repairs. Somebody that has experience welding aluminum will probably do alright, but for an amateur like myself, I'd have to get mine professionally done to get it to hold up ($$$). I also had to go with a heavier gage aluminum to get the same strength as steel, and I was a little disappointed with my weight savings (only about 5 to 10 lbs lighter). So for those two reasons, I think I'm going to stick with steel.

One of the problems I would have with using wake boards or water skis as dog sled skis is sidehilling. I like a dog sled that will follow in my snowmobile tracks and not try to pass me on the downhill side as I'm trying to skirt a cornice or gully. Snowmobile skis already have ridges and wear bars designed into them to keep them going straight. Whereas you'll have to modify a wake board or water skis to keep them from fishtailing on you when you're trying to side hill. But again, it all depends on the terrain you're hunting and how you're going to use it.

Dog Trailer

Post by nightrider »

Here's a few pic's of my trailer ,seems to be fairly bullet proof, The next one I build I will make a divider with side door so all the dogs don't end up at the back when you take off, which makes it tail heavy. You want the ski's or whatever you use for runners to be fairly close to the rear of the trailer for the water bar's if you have to deal with them. The hitch is spring loaded both ways to help with starting up or stopping. I put sliding plexi glass over the holes so I could shut them for rough going and to keep any dog's left in the box quite when I have other's out, the ski's are from a RMK 800. I use the spider netting on top for my pack, tracking box, lunch, etc. Hope this might give you a few Idea's. SamImage=Image=Image[/img]

I use an old dog sled. ( the kind the dogs pull) built a box on the platform and hook it to a snowmobile. You can even ride on the back, just like its used for.
