Bill Green's breeding advisor
Starting a new topic on this one becasue it perked my interest. Can some of you old time blue breeders out there help me out. Maybe Bob M in Montana, or Driftwood, or the Ragin Cajun. I thought Vinny Orlando had a lot to do with Bill Green's breeding program, but I might be wrong. I would like to know, I use to communicate with Vinny a good deal years ago but he was so ate up with his bluetick beagles at that time it was hard to get him on full sized hound. LOL! Very entertaining guy however.

I exchanged tapes for a long time with Vinny... lets just say that he created legends and leave it at that.

Re: Bill Green's breeding advisor
I never claimed to be a hound historian, so I have absolutely no clue about the relationship between Vinny and Bill Green. I got in this game way too late for any of that. I've always enjoyed reading those old articles in the BBCHA and ABGHA yearbooks and the articles in Full Cry through the years. I'll defer to Don or Bob as the official historians of big blue hounds. I'm just a wannabe.
However, even with my limited knowledge of old time breeders and breeding practices, I wonder how many were as pure as the driven snow in the crosses they made?
Interesting topic.

Vinny was a very intellegent, charismatic, skillfull writer, who was a hardworking Blue Book editor for BBCHA and regular writer for F.C. etc. He had a large podium and the skill to "Puff" certain
ones such as Bill. The Blue Books will show his agenda.
No Mike, I doubt he gave any breeding advice To Bill, cause Vinny was was not in favor of those type hounds and he himself was not a breeder. However Bills fame was ,to some extent helped along by Vinnys shaping of history in the "Blue Book" .
Vinny also said the O.O.Grant brought home French hounds when he returned from WW.W.1. I have O.O.`s letter here saying that it was all B.S.---that when they stuffed him on a troop ship, sick from mustard gas, there waas no room, desire or ability to do it. He went on to say that the devastation was so complete when he left Europe that he coulndn`t beleive that any dogs were left alive.
I lived 45 minutes from Vinny, hunted with him several hundred times and can say that he missed his calling, he would have been a sucessful politician,

Re: Bill Green's breeding advisor
So I heard.
Didn't Bill Mason write the first article about Bill Green, called "A Boy and His hounds"?
Do you know what hounds Bill Mason had at that time?
From old pics and Peds, it looks like Bill Green bred back and forth with the Lee bro.'s some?

You are right, Dr Whitney was a vet in Conn.Never heard of him having hounds.
Never heard of anyone in New England, interested in French hounds . I researched them and was the American Rep for the Gran Bleu/Saint. assoc in Paris. I flew to Detroit to see the first Gran Bleus sent to USA in many decades---They were a huge disappointment and, in my opinion, polluted much of the gene pool of the great bloodlines left by O.O.Grant.

Re: Bill Green's breeding advisor
Yep, heard all that too. However, after talking with you and Driftwood, I did find a couple of guys that said they would buy a whole truckload of the same kind anyday. So by that, something nicked somewhere. Probably like blooded, distant relation of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne? It was pretty slim pickin's anyway percentage of success wise. As near as I can tell, those 2 GBG studs threw about 100 litters.
I also heard that Dr. Whitney was studying dog genetics?

Are you aware that of those 100 litters, not one was worth a sdamm, nor would tree one bark, that most were terribly cowhocked, nasty tempered etc. May someone would buy a truck load, I sure would not want one,
Yes ,Whitney was into genetics, Carl caulkins, a good freind worked for him for years.
