How Big To Take Down An Elk?

Post by BuckNAze »

How big does a lion have to be to take down an elk? Either sex doesnt matter, cow or bull. Does it matter if they are a female or Tom? Only reason I ask is I may go to try to run a lion off a cow elk kill, not sure if its a Tom or Female though. But some of you must have expeirence with running off kills and what usually kills what. Give me some feedback. Thanks!

Yeah once my buddy gets back from a b-day party around 8 we are going to go try to run it off the kill. No one was in there today, found it along a creek bottom. Definite lion tracks around it. I guess we'll see if we can get lucky, probably hovering around freezing up there right now, been warmer then normal.

The only way you going to find out is go catch the cat and see what's in the tree!!!

All I could say is your probably not going to end up with a 20 # kitten in the tree unless of course momma is hanging around somewhere close.

Good Luck!! :D

Haha didnt sound like there was more then one cat around, no one was in there today so if we're lucky he hit it tonight, he or she I guess, I just havent treed any lions on my own or ran off a kill to know if it matters with size of an elk if it was to be too big for a female to take say a bull elk down, guess it doesnt matter if they get it around the throat though!

We found a fesh elk kill in a road 10 years ago it was a small 6 point bull the cat had road it down the hill a long ways before getting it killed. We treed the cat and it was a 80 or 90 pound female But she had broken her pelvis or back she got up the tree but couldn't use her back end so we put her down. I've found lots of elk kill through the years but I think they like deer better if there around to eat,

Found where a small female killed a yearling bull moose last year. Then not 100 yrds away a 1200 lb gelding lay dead in the spring but not sure what killed the gelding it had been to long. I have found alot of elk kills by females, small toms, as well as big toms. I figure they pretty much can kill whatever they want under the right circumstances :)

I agree. But I also think individual cats have preferences. I have seen on a number of occasions where a lion has walked past deer to go kill an elk. This usually happens when game is abundant.

Who knows what you will catch. I found a medium to smallish cow elk killed by a lion that was a average female track. It drug the dead elk at least 80yards to hide it in a wash. pretty impresive.
