Snowmobile sleds

Post by Liz ODell »

What do you guys like, Otter Sleds (what size/make)? Any one ever use the Jet Sleds made by Shappell? Anyone ever use the Moose cargo tub? Does any one know of anywhere on the west coast that carries Otter Sleds, the shipping from back east is crazy.

Really the best thing you can do is get a old pair of snowmobile skis weld them to a fram and build a box to fit it. Make it as wide as the ski stance on your sled so it rides in the groves. Try to keep it as low as possible so the center of gravity is balanced an low. Keeps it from tipping.

The jet sleds are horrible. To narrow and very tippy. We only use ours for hauling the dog crap daily. A couple of days worth it may tip! The otter sleds work, but you need to get the biggest you can, or at least one size down. The 2nd largest will hold a 4ft long x 2ft wide x 30in high box tight. I strap it down with a couple of ratchet straps so I can remove the box and use the sled for other things. The biggest thing you need to do is get the hitch. That way it stays tight with you. Not shooting all over the place. Also a good idea is the runners that screw on the bottom. Keeps them from wearing holes in the bottom.

The next best thing to building a box with skis. Is what is called a FOLD A SLED, or something similar. These are longer have runners, and a platform to stand on in the back. Much like a dog sled. Just build a box to go on one. Either bolt it or strap it. They are real nice as you can haul an extra hunter with you. New they are less than $400 and will last for years. Sometimes you can ones like this on craigs list is you watch. Just watch the size. There were some small 4ft ones made.

Again with any sled. A solid hitch is a must. No ropes!! Some hitches will have a swivel where they attach to the snowmobile. If you can weld them solid. This will keep them from tipping on there own. Only time they will tip is if you do then. For some reasons the dogs don't liek to flip over

I would 2nd on the Jet sleds they are awful. The stiff hitch system is weak and unreliable and they seem to tip over easily. Have been trying to get an otter sled for a while now but as you said the shipping is nuts and its hard to find someone with them in stock.
