LION SEASON IN NORTHWEST NEW MEXICO CLOSED

Post by Mike Leonard »

Please Note:
Due to the indiscriminate killing of female cougars in NM GMU's 2&7 the lion season has been closed.

The kill for today with no regard for tomorrow hound hunters of the area have taken away a large part of your season.

Please be advised, you must hold a valid NM Trapper's License to continue to bobcat or coon hunt in these game managment units.

Also remember bobcat season ends March 15th., 2010.

Other than the females that were killed, this is a blessing in disguise.
Hopefully the lion population will increase in there.

Cut that female sub quota in half...It will shut down twice as fast.
Maybe that will get their attention.

Don't remember the kids name for sure, but I think it was Trace Sullivan. He is the young man responsible for taking four or five of the females in unit 2. I guess daddy has some money and bought him one hell of a pack of hounds. He told my buddy that the quotas are set for a reason and he's going to kill everything he tree's until they are filled! What a houndsmen!!!!

Well there must be a trickle down effect, because they are killing females left and right here in UT. It is very difficult to find a track these days. I went into the taxidermist the other day, he told me " I got a Monster Tom in the back" so I went to check it out, and well they called it 175, I would say mmmmmmmmmaybe 135 on a good day, and then I looked around the corner and there was a bobcat and well I thought it was another bobcat, but no it was a KITTEN, and if it went 45 lbs I would be suprised. All the quotas here are being filled with females and sub adults, and well a good tom is a thing of the past. I guess I will just have to train my hounds to hunt on the net.

Sorry to gripe so much, but it is getting tough to hunt lions.

Unfortunately that is the fate of AZ also due to some guys who think everything up a tree must die. The AZGFD will be implementing a female harvest quota next hunting season in many of the units across the state. I won't mention any names but there is a guy around me that kills sub adult females without flinching. It's too bad, AZ is still one of the few places you can hunt Lion year around but that will come to an end soon if these antics don't stop.

One thing that some hunters forget is that we are the best conservationalist there is and it is a resposiblity of all of us. But then maybe those who choose to be carless are not real hunters to begin with.

Private land is exempt to quotas in New Mexico, but lions taken on private land count towards quotas.

NMPlotts it closes on private as well. Private land is not exempt if they were a quota would make no sense. At the start of the new license year in April private land can start hunting again with a new quota

Correct you are Big Mike.

Landowners note: OWNERS not lease holders can report depredation and upon investigation may recieve permission to hunt and harvest the culprit. this however is not a blanket to kill any lion they see on their property. this has been distorted by many and most likley loosley enforced in many regions. The landowner or an agent or employee of the landowner can destroy predators or canines attacking livestock. Horses, cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Not sure on poultry but I do know housepets such as yard dogs do not qualify.

Big Mike can you clear that up for us?

This topic is mind boggling to me. I have a couple hunters each year you have been on 1 or more cat hunts in the lower 48. Either they came out empty ar shot females or young toms. Alot of the outfitters are to blame as well as local sportsmen. Everytime I hear the story of females being shot the story is the same, The outfitter says pull the trigger as the season could close in a few days. This is sickening, A lion hunt should be a trophy hunt and at minimum a tom only hunt.I hear the same story over and over again, at some point the outfitters need to smarten up as well. Its no wonder they offer cat hunts for 1/2 the price as I do up here, they have 1/2 the success and shoot 1/2 the size of cats. YOu see too many pictures, even posted here of dink cats afew would never make 100 pounds.
