BMC OR plotts
I'm considering either a plott or BMC for hogs and bear. I like to hunt both animals and would like a dog that can be very versatile maybe a squirled. But basically a companion. I'd like to here some pro & cons if any. I'm not familiar with neither of them. Ive been reeding some of the forums that say some like there dogs close mouth. Then others like them open all the way till the dogs tree a bear. Thanks for your help

I have had both the BMC and the Plott, I prefer the plott but its my preferance. Like with all dogs make sure you get pups from a breeder that uses them for what you want them used for. I had bmc's that were excellent herd dogs, actually natural herd dogs but on my ranch we do not use dogs, but they were not to game worthy. Plotts have been great with me and nothing more loyal than my plotts. I have one female that is maybe 50 pounds soaking wet and she will protect my 5 year old NO MATTER WHAT. My advice to you is find some one close to you and hunt with thier dogs, then try one from the other breed. See how they act in the kennel, how they act in the field and then make your decision.

i hunt with both i personally have plotts and my buddy hunts curs the main difference that i see is that my plott is open and his curs are silent he has good dogs but when the conditions are really dry i have better luck with the hound taking the track not to say that the curs can't do it i do not want to get a debate on which dog can smell better. i believe that his silent dogs can get a hog shut down alot quicker and may catch more hogs quicker than my hounds due to being silent but if it is a runner the hound can usually stay with it longer. i have seen some curs that can run the track as long but it is alot easier to find a hound that will go hunt than it is to find a cur that will go hunt. there are some great curs out there but hounds are easier to find that will go hunt out long distances that is another thing you need to think about is what size land you have to hunt if you get a hound you better have larger size land to hunt. i will say again that curs will hunt long distances also but it is easier to find closer range curs this is my experience in 13 years of hunting hogs we also have alot of luck with half plott and half curs we have a few of them the best cross that i have ever seen was half walker and half moutain cur
good luck
