Forward Message:
Hi All,
As the information contained below indicates, we are in for a very tough fight if we are to see some or all of the DFG proposals be adopted.
I am working with COHA to create a press release of our own that will call out the many inaccuracies perpetrated by HSUS and their allies.
It’s time for every one of of us, both those who are on the Leadership Team (officers, trustees, committee chairmen) and those who are the rank and file members of CHC, to get engaged. Should we fail in these endeavors to expand bear hunting and hound hunting opportunities, it may cause HSUS to think us vulnerable and serve to motivate them to challenge us with an anti-bear hunting initiative. Let’s win this fight in the DFG/Commission arena, shall we!
Please distribute this email far and wide!
Josh

Statement by The Humane Society of the United States on Expansion of Black Bear Trophy Hunt in California
(Feb. 2, 2010) — Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, made the following statement in response to the California Department of Fish and Game’s proposal last week to expand black bear trophy hunting and ease current restrictions:
“The California Department of Fish and Game’s proposal to expand trophy hunting of black bears is unwarranted, inhumane and reckless. The Humane Society of the United States will work hard to block the Department’s proposal and to ban all hound hunting of bears in California.”
The proposal would allow an unlimited number of bears to be killed in California; expand the hunt to San Luis Obispo, Modoc and Lassen counties; and legalize the use of high-tech global positioning systems to make it easier for hunters to make their kills. The populations of bears in San Luis Obispo, Modoc and Lassen counties are quite small and have not been adequately studied to determine what impact a trophy hunt might have on their health and stability.
The use of packs of dogs to pursue and harass black bears is already permitted in the state, and it is cruel and unsporting. The Department has compounded that problem by allowing hunters to use global positioning systems and “tip switches” or “treeing switches” in their search-and-destroy method of high-tech hunting. GPS devices attached to dogs’ collars allow hunters to monitor the chase from afar, while the treeing switch alerts hunters when a bear is cornered in a tree by sending a signal when the dogs raise their heads.
The proposed regulatory package will be presented to the California Fish and Game Commission on Thursday.

Isn't GPS and treeing switches ILLEGAL in CA?
Are they spouting off more untrues or did CA recently allow GPS and treeing switches?

Re: HUSUS Response!
IT IS the recomendation of the Fish & Game TO ALLOW THESE.
They're finally seeing that the safety of the dog could greatly be increased by allowing said devices.

Re: HUSUS Response!
one point it was stated that the use of hounds to hunt black bear was unsporting. this does a couple things one is it tries to separate the non houndhunters from the houndsmen split and conquer style. secondly for future reference it admits there is sport in hunting if they stick and twist meanings so can we. maybe some one with debating skills could bring this statement up at the meeting and use it to good advantage. I hope you the very best luck in defending houndsmen everywhere as if they win in your state it will lead to each state there after and we should all be aware of that.

Think i am gonna start training my hounds to run and tree these animal rights idots. If they were as concerned about the people in this country who are sick and starving to death as they are about what we do with our dogs this would be a better place to live.

Re: HUSUS Response!
Heres my thoughts on rebuttals.
It was odvoius that the HSUS is anti hunting. The dfg commision didnt seem to like this.
Making the point in a statement that they are no different than PETA or any other anti hunting/animal activist group in their agenda could be benifitial. Only difference is that they do it under the cover of what most people think is pet animal welfare, sheltering, spay and nutering programs.
Another point to make is that many who are in favor of the dfg's expansion proposal have given to HSUS over the years prior to their new anti agenda. I will admit that I have put money in the HSUS jar at the local animal shelter when I droped off dog food from time to time until I was more educated on the subject. (please dont hate me)
Another point to make in a statement is that the HSUS claims to be an animal welfare group. Houndsman are asking for GPS as an animal welfare tool. Our dogs! HSUS trys to make the claim that GPS will enable a houndsman to get to their dogs easyer and possibly faster. Making it less sporting or too easy. Mabye make the point that if that mindset holds any value then wouldnt it be true that the bear will spend less time being treed/harassed in their opinion. This point is especially valuable if the hunter is a "catch and release" hunter in which many are.
A very important point is emphasising that fact that many many houndsman are "catch and release" hunters. Possibly making a poll or some kind of survey amongst bear hunters as to the number of bears that are treed and harvestable and are not killed might be a great piece of favorable information to the DFG commision.
One last thing is the HSUS in the above statement used the word "trophy hunting" many times. Mabye make a point as to the ammount of meat that a bear provides for a family.
I will make time to be at the next round. I will happily make these points if the general consensus thinks its worth while or somone else thinks they could say it better.
