Good sure footed horse

Last week my horse twisted his gut and I couldnt save him. SO I am in the market for a good sure footed horse that handles the real rocky country. I live in southern AZ Near Safford . I would like a 7 or 8 year old gelding Needs to be prety stout because I am farly large weighing 215. ol degan sure is going to be hard to replace he was one hell of a horse he was a going sun of a gun

We could all use one of those, but ever since the forrest service killed the cattle industry in the Rocky Mountain west' they just aren't as easy to come by any more. Good luck and if you find 2 or 3 let the rest of us know. I had to switch to mules, but they come with thier own issues!!

You are certinly right there. It took me a while to find the horse I had he came of the point of pines ranch or they call the R-100 ranch . I would love a mule but i dont think I could handal one yet I think he would be smarter than me LOL. I was just hopeing I would get lucky and find another good ol trust worthy horse.

I don't know where you are, or who you know, but I believe that Johnny Klump works with quite a few horses. He is also a straight shooter.

If you find a good mule you'll be done with horses. Really good mountain horses are hard to come by, specially for those rock piles around Safford. On the bright side horse prices are cheap right now so good time to find a good one for sale. Good luck

Good advice from Big Mike.

If you want a horse for that country get one that was raised in that country.

I use to do a lot of hunting down there and also gathered a lot of wild cattle. We had horses on the ranch that had never been off that place in their life. I mean some of these gelding were pretty long in the tooth but let me tell you they were rock horses deluxe. There is not flat ground in that country and those horses are always on and slope and it is littered with rocks.

Now add speed which is needed (when the wild ones break and scatter because it is catch as catch you can and that rockbed ain't no arena when you go to pitch yer hoolihan.It's a sport not fit for gunsels who can barely sit a horse do you right successful takes fancy riden and lots of guts acourse. But hell pard it don't bother old curley he wolves like you and me. No sir, we will just rope em like that devil and hitch em to a tree. ) From Cowcatchers

What are looking to spend? I'm not sure if I am wanting to sell this horse But if the price is good I may. My wife and I have been talking about having to sell one of my four. Dont know if it will help but I live in Morenci AZ and hunt hard on horse back. Thanks,

it is pretty tuff finding one for sure. I have a couple bar y bred raised in Utah. all poco bred and laid back. they work pretty well a little shorter but well muscled and stocky. real easy to get on and off of exspecially on uphill side. they raise quit a few head and they're good ones.

If you would like I'll ask Keith Wilkerson this weekend he'll be down here and he's your neighbor. Him and I hunted together some and his horses are sure enough good in the rock if he don't have one he might know of one in your area.

I know it is a haul but we are having a horse sale the second weekend in june. There is only 70 head consigned from just a few different breeders. This is not going to be the run of the mill type horse sale. All the horses are ranch horses raised either on the mountain or on rocky ridges.

you can always try Robertson's horse sale in Benson the consignments vary in quality wildly. but if you go to them directly Lisa or mike can usually put you in contact with what your looking for.

Horses are pretty cheap right now at the Sunday horse sale last week at St. Onge, South Dakota. Registered 2 years old were averaging about $150. and older mares and such were lower one mare brought $15. and she sold. Winter has been tuff in that country. My son was at the sale and he said you could buy a sure nuff cow horse that wasn't too old for less than thousand. Course most of them horses are not mountain horses but I reckong they would do ok.

I have an old gray horse here that I wouldn't have traded a new Caddlilac for yesterday. I got myself in one of those bad jackpots starting on a very cold track and ended up high breaking thru 3 foot of crusted snow in some places. It was a mess and the dogs ended up way up in the bad bluffs and I wasn't as prepared for this as I should have been. Old Gus went thru places I couldn't stand up. He lost a little hair and I lost a little hide but we both made it ok. Storm blowing in and I gathered the reminants off the mountain early this morning. Damn I am sick of winter!
