vr 500 is a yaesu scanner - with a lot of practice --you can find your dogs :) it will track any frequency - it isnt as easy to use as a regular tracking box -- no gain control --in time , you will get good at estimating distance -

the price is real reasonable - 200 ?

range is adequate for cat hunting- most the time, i get 2 -3 miles

- its a radio - terrain and cover is everything- i know of places range is half that or twice that :)

i use an alinco scanner for bear hunting- i think the range is just a touch better than a yaesu
- i do better with my scanner on 151 collars than i do 217 -

less bounce--more range--

i dont know anything about the magnum , mt 8000
it looks like an aor scanner to me -- :)

I use a vr-500. I have bear hunted and coon hunted using it. I have it mounted on a wildlife mini and it is so handy i carry it all the time. If you use the booster the range is about as good as most. When i hook it to the yagi the system as is as good or better an mt-8000. The cost is why i got it and i am well pleased with mine.
