One thing you guys need to STOP worrying about is running into ONE wolf!!!!! ONE wolf is not going to kill your dogs!!! 6,8,10,12 or more wolves are going to kill your dogs. So unless your going to turn 12 or so Dogos, PittPlotts, Wolfhounds or whatever else you can dream up loose with your hounds you might as well forget it!!! All turning one "wolf fighting" dog loose with your hounds is gonna do is keep one wolf busy, while the rest kill your dogs.

I dont mean to sound harsh but this is reality. If your gonna find a way to keep wolves off your hounds you need to find a way to keep "A PACK" off them, and stop worrying about "A" DOG that can kill "A" WOLF. Period.
The fascination of hunting cougar with hounds lies in the discovery and unravelling of a complicated trail, watching an honest hound strike out on a track that has been found and read, and finally bringing the animal to bay so that you can see it for yourself---Jerry A. Lewis

Now it's all adding up, yer from Wa. You hunted Idaho and MT a bit? So i guess that makes the statement "One wolf is no match" valid? When you were hunting Id and MT a bit did you see some domestic dogs kill a wolf? All your personal hands on experience with dogo's and wolfhounds killing Canadian Grey's must be where your logic comes from?
Sometimes you see a single lone wolf, but it's not very common, almost always enough of em to wipe out your couple dogo's or wolfhounds, so that means theres at least one or two wolves, but good luck with that. I can sure point you in the right direction if you wanna come test out your theory, it's gonna be prety hard to test it in Ca or Wa, so come on up. You'll have a light load headin back to socal.

If you have ever done any reading on the history of plott hounds you will find that the early pioneers used to take a female plott hound and tie her to a tree and let a male wolf come to breed her. They couldn't breed a male plott to a female (hand raised) wolf because they came out "crazy". They done this so they could expand their breeding stock. Now these were the "Red Wolves" of western NC and Eastern TN. They were MUCH smaller than the Canadian wolves you guys are dealing with. But, these half wolf x half plotts were used to hunt down the same wolves in the mountains for the $5 bounty on them. Evidently they got the job done. Maybe someone might give this a try. Wild male wolf breeding a female dog that's close in size to a canadian wolf. The problem may be a female wolf smelling her and killing her before the male can breed her. Who knows. Just a thought. Let us know if it works.

I have studied plott history very closely, and have never come across the female being tied out. The plott family did however have a captive wolf that was possibly crossed with their dogs. The wolf blood would have been bred down to a minimum. Never have I heard or read about any half wolf plotts running down wolves for the plott family.

Someone who did utilize half wolf half sled dogs to kill wolves, was Frank Glaser. The method mostly consisted of luring wolves within rifle range with the wolfdogs howls.

Is it worth the vet bills? i coyote hunt a bit and trap timbers also, ive seen a wounded coyote give a dog a few nice battle scars and put up one hell of a fight, and thats a 40 lb animal, now put a 100 lb or bigger with a bite pressure of around 2000 lbs, shits getting messy, not only when the dogs fighting the initial wolf, mr wolfs buddy is gunna come up from behind and tear at its guts. I knew some guys that intentionally set out on some wolfs with some of there best dogs, they ran for about a mile and the guys lost all the dogs (killed) and only had one working radio tracking collar left out of the deal

this has been done to death elsewhere.
the modern wolfhound is basically a mix of scottish deerhound & great dane the amount of wolf killing in their background is REAL small if any. it's value as a purebred is questionable but it might be good for adding size into a purpose bred cross.
the most important aspect of protecting your dogs is going to be having the numbers TOGETHER when the wolves hit to be able to out weigh EACH & EVERY wolf. so if you have a pack of 90-120# canadian greys (the actual AVERAGE size range) you'll need 250-300 athletic & aggressive pounds of dog PER wolf. so 5+ 60# or bigger dogs per wolf would mean you'd need a pack of about 80 dogs to take on a pack of 12 wolves.
i live & hunt in red wolf country they are not a problem because the dogs are about the same size & the dog packs are as big or bigger.
i am moving to big wolf country soon and will be trying to figure a way around it but the first thing i will be doing is outfitting every dog w/ a spike collar like they put on livestock guard dogs in 3rd world countries. 4inch iron/steel spikes sharpened & barbed & dipped in rotting roadkill. it may not save the dog's life, but it might help thin the wolves. i'll let folks here know if it does anygood.

unfortunately the season & quotas won't allow for a large enough kill to matter.

at the very least it could mean a bad day for several days and possibly that particular wolf (wolves) learning to avoid dogs the same as porkys
