A treeing Border collie

A while back I posted a question about making a hunting dog out of a non hound bread dog. My wife and I went out to day to do a training session with the hound pup with a caged critter. We were out doing chores and had her border collie with us when we found our cage occupied. I ran and got my hound and we went to run it. I poured water on it so the scent would be heavier. And I will be damed if that border collie didn't put his nose to the ground and ran it right with my dog. The only bad out of it is a border collie is trained to fetch so he will be bringing stuff back to us.

I have one of those dam border collies that is coon crazy the only prob i see is when he gets bord he starts to try and work the hounds like cows

I have a border collie Elkhound mix, she loves working coons with my father in laws walkers, I was wondering if any of you would think it a good idea to mix her with my stepdad's blue tick? She already out does the walkers in the field, and she tears the coons up just like the hounds. anyone else think this would be a good coon dog cross? Not interested in competitive hunts, I just like the sport.

We had a few English Shepherd that would hunt and tree coons and squirrel. Great hunting dogs. I think here in America we tend to only use dogs for 1 thing. Not the multipurpose dog of the early settlers. There's bird dogs, coon dogs, bear dogs, hog dogs and cat dogs, ect... what ever happened to the hunting, farm protector, herding dog. 1 dog to do everything?

I personally think whatever you breed to a collie or shepherd will only improve the smarts of the dog. It takes a very intelligent dog to track and tree constantly. So adding the intelligence to a hound will only make it smarter.

I currently own a $3000 sheep trial dog and while I am still learning about hounds, I can tell you this about border collies: 1: they are smart as a whip, and they LIVE to work. My border collie will literally work himself to death (or the sheep, whoever dies first) because it is what he loves. Since mine has been conditioned to work sheep that is what he does, but I'm sure if you could light a fire in a BC to want to tree critters, that is all he will think about and 2: they have highly predatory instincts. 3: They want to please their owners. I'm no expert, but I don't see why any of these traits would be bad in a hunting dog. They can even be taught to use their nose. I nearly certified an Australian Shepherd in search and rescue here in my state. He was an air scent dog who's favorite game was hide and seek in the woods. Point is hounds are used because they come with a lot of natural ability that just needs to be honed, but if you have a great dog with the desire to do a job, you can usually make something out of them.

Border collie crosses feature in lots of hunting dogs here in the UK- just imagine channeling that obsessive compulsive nature into doing exactly what you want!

The secret is out!!! But don't tell anyone. There are a lot of people whose best hound of a lifetime had at least a shot of herd dog, wheather they know it or will admit it or not.
There is a hard to find book out there that has this message in secret code if you can find the book and figure out the code. Lol.

Flag tailed would be a whole other rabbit hole to go down. But the author of that book is a bit embarrassed to admit how many paragraphs in that book have the border collie in mind. It's right there between the lines. He was trying very hard not to be biased and to give everybody equal time. But "Dog A" on page 19 was 1/4 Border Collie, Tammy on pg 236 is 1/2 border collie. The pup on pg 263 is 1/4 border collie. The dog in the foreground on pg 253 is 1/4 border collie. Others in that picture may well have collie blood, (and I suspect they do). Their breeding background was a huge secret. The only living person (I know of) who MIGHT know is Ron Ganus and he might tell me, but then he'd have to kill me.
