Jumpin cats

People around here are finding out that im gettin my dogs ready to run cats and evey body has got somthin to say about it. One of the most common things im hearing is that bobcats will always jump before you get to the tree if they tree at all. I don't know what to beleave on the matter seeing that all these folks who are tellin me this don't hunt cats. What do you professionals have to say about jumpin cats?

With Treetype Hounds and on some Cat even with Running Type hounds, a Bobcat will jump. However most of the time the Cat was never up the tree! Cats use all sorts of tricks and going up a tree then switching trees or going back down a leaning tree next to the original or any other of many possibilities it is still the same...the Cat was not up!

Getting an Honest, reliable locating Treedog is the second hardest part of Cat Hunting (finding the reliable, honest, broke, strike and trail Hound being the hardest).

Now when you get the right Hounds and pressure the Cat enough, when you put him up you can not whip him out of the tree. Paintballs, Punchpoles, Treeclimbers all have hell putting a Cat out whose just run a hard punishing race.

In the area I hunt I can count on one hand the times I have had a bobcat jump out but I can not speak for other area but for the most part they usually head to the top of the tree and couldnt be poked out with a sharp stick. I do take precautions when coming into a tree and always try to come in on the up hill side of the tree and not make alot of noise once I get close to the tree. later, Andy

Will a cat be more apt to jump in the day or night? I plan on huntin both.

Again put him up right with the right Hounds and time of the Day ain't going to matter!

Folks using "Coon Dogs" not Treebred Coon Hound Pedigreed dogs that run an occasional Bobcat are always telling of treeing Bobcat and having them jump out at night when the Cat sees the lights coming through the woods.

Go find one of the GOOD Hunters in NC and get some solid info from "someone who knows where of he speaks"...ignore the wantobees!

Spent about an hour trying to get one to jump out of a tree today. Couldnt get it done. I have never had one jump tree(havnt caught that many either). But ive had a lot of the sneaky little devils rub up on trees and play tricks getting dogs to false tree.

Ive hunted cat in Ca, Or, Wa, Id, and in MO only had 3 jump in 20 years most of the time you cant hardly make one jump

This is a subject that has came up before and i rolled my eyes at it . In all of my years of cat hunting i have only seen 2 jump . They were both pop ups and they picked trees that were only 8 to 10 feet tall. they jumped before the dogs even located them. I have went to trees before where the cat was sleeping in the tree . cougars and bears come out of the tree sometimes when hit by a light but bobs are pretty content. But again the trees over here are big .

now guys before you make a absolute remember if you tree one in a short tree like a mesquite he can be shoved or drug out making it sound like he treed then jumped in a race. takes a good dog to drag one on their own though they usually swat at the dogs peak or extended hang time. sometimes takes a few hounds to encourage each other or that one dog may just suddenly become a "sit down tree dog"
