coyote hunting styles
how do you die hard yote specialist hunt. nighttime or day?how big of pack do you use/what type of hound/ do you freecast/rig for them. road for fresh tracks then dump./ locate with a howler etc. then dump./ shoot and run the missed yote's/ road for coyotes by sight then dump the dogs on them./trap them and run on the side or use trap dogs only/decoy dogs/ use sight hounds or combos. I'd like to hear about your preferred methods and please state your region and terrain you most commonly hunt. coyotes are widespread and I am sure the methods are as variable. there was a new guy asking questions on here and I thought if you guys would answer these questions it would give them more info and a better idea of what works in their area.

Pegleg or others: Up in northern Maine we are so VERY BLESSED to have such an abundance of of yotes
My son and his yote crew don't really have what you describe as a Rigg Yote hound . During late fall early spring they just look for tracks before setting hounds down. During the height of winter when snow is deep they pretty much bait hunt the yotes and calling them in .If the snow is less than 10 inches deep on the woods roads they will also drag the hounds out to bait sites to try and give them a run .

Re: coyote hunting styles
here in central ar. we run yotes during the daytime dec. jan. feb. we run at night the rest of the year anywhere from 4 dogs to as many as 20 or 30 depending on how many guys go most of us run walkers some walker/july cross usually freecast unless somebody sees one try to call around here works twice at most the yotes also get wise to pickups traveling up and down the roads we run in the river bottoms surrounded by mountains they dont just stay in the bottoms ( well there mountains to me not like out west) no sight hounds i have never killed a yote in front of my dogs ( dont condone it its just hard to run a dead yote) have not had my dogs kill a yote that i know of now the problem is the deer around here cannot have a good yote race for all the deer but i am going to try and bend the dogs off them
Re: coyote hunting styles
this is something I've wondered now there's a difference between running to catch and running to listen and I have absolutely no problem with either. but here's my question if your out running yotes or fox and your there to listen why aren't you guys running slower hounds with a big mouth on them ? I am not berating anyones hounds or choice. It's a honest question. I would think a slower hound would actually be better as the game would be more likely to circle then when having a fast hound running them. Again not criticizing thats just a question I have personally wondered about.

Re: coyote hunting styles
I hunt Northern Wisconsin forest country. We run mainly grade local bred dogs, mainly redbone, treeing walker and plott looking things.
We just drive roads in our country find a track from the night before, put 1-2 cold trackers on it and then after its jumped put 2-3 more dogs on it. Lots of running through the swamps and lots of snowmobile time. We shoot more in front of the dogs then we catch but we do catch some. There are lots of coyotes up here (not as many as in pure farm country but still plenty) but its just hard to see/hit the things in the thick forests. A very good winter for us is 20 yotes and thats hunting every weekend and some weekdays (conditions allowing) from jan 1 til end of feb.

real similar to how we did it in the plains most of the time we'd drop a staghound or two out after the hounds jumped them. haven't done that in years brings back memories. as a kid riding in the truck was my favorite in the winter. it was about the only time i was warm. I think it was a psychological trick my dad used to get us up and feeding in the mornings if it's cold enough in the house that truck looks pretty inviting

Re: coyote hunting styles
A typical day for us would start around 7am with members of our group driving around different blocks looking for fresh tracks. If found we would continue around the block to make sure the coyote has not left the block. Depending on how many dogs we have usually 2 up to 6 we would cast them at the tracks going into the block. We also try to keep a truck on the road to keep watch if the coyote or dogs leave the block. We generally hunt farm land.We pick up the dogs before night. Coyotes become much more bold and aggressive after dark.

pegleg thats what i do run to listen hadnt really thought about the slower hounds with booming mouths i like to raise my own puppies so i breed my best bitch to my best dog (by that i mean dogs that suit me) so whatever kind of mouth they have their born with we dont have the problem with yotes getting bolder at night have had some decent dogs with sorry mouths by that i mean they could run a track just not a booming mouth. in your opinion if the dam and sire have booming mouths will all the pups have booming mouths?
