I would say if you saw deformed pups its not from inbreeding. It would be from unsound breeding stock that sould not be bred at all. Inbreeding can only produce what is already there. Inbreeding will tell you alot about your breeding stock, like if they are prepotent to pass on the desirable traits or if the dog is a cull in the breeding pen.
As for me, if I got deformed pups from a breeding I would look very hard at fixing that line so no more pups were ever born! Even if you outcross you will still send those genes down the line and they will show up later on.
I suggest reading any thing from Richard McDuffie, or Al Lynn on the subject. Even if you don't plan on close breeding the info on genetics is a huge plus for any breeding program.

if i had 2 dogs that i thought were 100% what i wanted-- id breed them -in a heart beat --
father daughter --whatever-
what i see in the real world is dogs i can live with -- some great dogs sometimes but always something i would change if i could
dogs that share a grandparent --- or uncle/niece cross
seems to work well -
another thing that seems to work is look for dogs that are from good litters --- i belive a better chance they will reproduce than a real good dog from a poor litter - or a real good dog that just seemd to come from nowhere - everybody has seen the superstar that was out of two mutts - but most the time he wont reproduce much - the more good dogs in that pedigree the better your odds -the better the family of dogs is the better chance of getting a useable dog-the littermates to the dogs you breed and the parents littermates carries lot more weight with me than a dog 3-4 generations back -and they dont show on pedigree -
if anybody figures out how to breed whole litters of superstars please let me know -- - i dont think its ever been done and if it is, its top secret -
its a gamble every cross -- just try to play the odds - you probably wont change the world with one cross -but thats how its done --one at a time

Thanks for all the feedback, been some great insights into peoples thoughts, experiences on the subject.
Your right Pete, if it was as easy as a set formula everyone one would have champions every x, I spose. Your also right about breeding from some real good dogs that leave nothing but mutts. Ive done plenty of that.
That why I was real intersted to see how successful breeders went about keeping a line when they have a pair of dogs that have proven to leave good dogs, and keep this line going.
Thanks "dawger" for the reading material reference.
Good to see site up and running again, its a wealth of info for me here downunder,
Cheers Rimfire
