I run mine on coon.. They do not have the tracking ability in them. You still need a sent dog for that and a Jack is a sight dog. Mine will run with the pack and tree like no tomorrow and kills better then most of my hounds. Most Jacks ( NOT ALL ) will get VERY mean when you start to hunt them alot. They are very kill driv'en dogs. As far as Bobs goes, like coon for the most part they just do not have the nose to get the job done.
Good luck

There are thousands of coon caught with those little buggers every year in the farming areas of america. I know of single hunters in Iowa that catch several hundred coon every year with them hunting barns once the coons den up and the fur is excelent prime. The Jacks are prefered over the Jadgs because the Jacks will bay a coon in a tight corner instead of pulling it out in an uncontrolled situation. These barn hunters carry a whole arsenal of tools for tearing appart a barn and putting it back together. Farmers love them though. They get tired of coon droppings all over their good hay.
These guys do not use any hound or other dog, so the jacks are locating the coon.

I am sure theycan be effective pest getter around out building and corn fields as was stated but they do not track well on anything but a jump out. I had a friend who use to bring his along on cat hunts and he was nothing but a pain in the a$$. Hounds would tree a lion or a cat and he would attack them on the tree, get worked up but didn't know what to do. On bobcats they may work in a hole but Jadg terriers are much better for all around work and can trail and tree their own game. I had a friend who had a blue heeler bitch that was a hunting machine and he caught a lot of coon with her every year, but it sure wasn't classic coon hunting it was get fur any way you can.
But if it is all you have then try it. but like an old lion hunter told me one time(it's pretty hard to make chicken salad out of chicken $hit!) LOL!

If you are looking for a terrier w/ scent ability I would go for a jagd first then patterdale or lakeland then jrt... Most jacks have been bread for pets and wont make the cut of a true hunting dog... Not to say they cant they can but if I was going to get one it would be from proven hunters. If size isn't an issue I would look at the redline airedale terriers.. Just my 2 cents...

there is a guy about two minutes away that does this same thing :: waits till the coon dens in the barn then puts the russel into the holes in the hay .. they will face a coon nose to nose .. the guy digs the bales out till they get the coon and then they repile the hay best they can back in ... Lot of work to do this but seems to get alot of coon that way .
